I don’t think this movie has aged great.

The first super noticeable thing is the sound is just awful.

And while the performances are fascinating and there’s a ton of good stuff, a lot of it is just annoying. Flat out annoying.

I’m not going to say it’s a bad movie, but it is exhausting to watch

When’s the last time you watched it?

I was 23. I have no desire to see it again... but I still want to blast you in the head with a grapefruit.

It'd one of my favorite books. Saw the movie ths theater and have watched it a dozen times. Hunter Thompsons 2 second cameo was perfect. I love the movie.

I saw this in the theater when I was a teenager. It was a bad movie then and it's a bad movie now. Incredibly boring.

This is a thread to separate the high powered mutants from the weasels who lack true grit.

I had a similar opinion when I originally saw it in the theatre… later in life my opinion vastly changed.

Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

...

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back

The Circus-Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This is the sixth Reich. The ground floor is full of gambling tables, like all the other casinos... but the place is about four stories high, in the style of a circus tent, and all manner of strange County-Fair/Polish Carnival madness is going on up in this space.

quote:

Hallucinations are bad enough. But after awhile you learn to cope with things like seeing your dead grandmother crawling up your leg with a knife in her teeth. Most acid fanciers can handle this sort of thing. But nobody can handle that other trip-the possibility that any freak with $1.98 can walk into the Circus-Circus and suddenly appear in the sky over downtown Las Vegas twelve times the size of God, howling anything that comes into his head. No, this is not a good town for psychedelic drugs

quote:

They look like caricatures of used-car dealers from Dallas. But they’re real. And, sweet Jesus, there are a hell of a lot of them—still

Hunter Thompson’s hipster vibe is kind of cheesy in hindsight but you have to admire the guy for truly not giving a shite and giving conventional society the finger.

Right, but we are talking about the movie and while Depp’s portrayal is great, it doesn’t match the man shown in a documentary about Thompson.

Sure, he may pull out drugs or guns at any moment, but he also went and covered political events.

Having seen neither, how does this compare with Bill Murray's portrayal of HST in Where the Buffalo Roam ?

We were near Barstow when the drugs took hold. I've been wanting to watch this recently but never find the time.

Hunter S. Thompson would absolutely loathe (no pun intended) hipsters if he was alive today.

He's what hipsters think they are and try so hard to be but can't because they don't have an original bone their body and are too busy sniffing their own assholes.

On topic, the book is amazing and makes me literally lol. Movie is entertaining in capturing some of the madness and Depp is probably the only actor that could've portrayed him with any accuracy considering how close they were.
