Yeah I guess hipster isn’t the right word for back then. Maybe what the Beats called a hepcat borrowed from jazz musicians. I put guys like Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Alan Ginsburg into that generation of pre-hippies. Beatniks. With Thompson and Kesey being the wildest of the group.

I saw a 30 minute interview Thompson. He was extremely intellectual. And he described himself as a violent man who didn’t like to hurt people but if he had to, he’d try and hurt the right people.

Also, interestingly enough, he hated the actual writing process
