Also, all the ones previously stated of course, but I’d add Legends of the Fall as a western. It gets overlooked because Brad Pitt and chicks dig him, but what a phenomenal movie.

Straying away from the obvious… how about Akira Kurasawa’s Seven Samurai or Yojimbo. Or… going back to the roots of what are now common western archetypes…. consider Stagecoach with John Wayne becoming John Wayne right in front of your eyes. It might be because I enjoy Christian Bale in just about anything, but I think Hostiles is excellently acted by him and the many familiar faces in the cast. It’s a tough ride that makes the ending earned. Lastly, The Wild Bunch Original Director’s Cut is worth looking for and is, I think, the better version of what is probably my favorite Pekinpah film.

The Searchers
Top 5 movie all time. Not just westerns. The best western that ever was.
The Man from Snowy River the scene where he rides the horse down that hill is as good a stunt as was ever performed on film. Wonder how many men got hurt and or horses killed or maimed to get that scene done.

Kid:"Who gave you that black eye, Mister?"
Conagher:"Nobody gave it to me, son. I had to fight for it."

Shane. He used the most vicious insult there was:
quote:
Shane : So you're Jack Wilson.
Jack Wilson : What's that mean to you, Shane?
Shane : I've heard about you.
Jack Wilson : What have you heard, Shane?
Shane : I've heard that you're a low-down Yankee liar.
Jack Wilson : Prove it.
