Burt Bacharach in Austin Powers. Loved the intro too because they didn't even try to disguise it at all. "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Burt Bacharach."

He would never play piano on a double decker tour bus.

Some of you guys don't know what a Cameo is. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder was not a cameo. He got a freakin Oscar nom for that.

Favre in Something About Mary is my all time favorite. "I'm in town to play the Dolphins, you dumbass."

I want to say Bill Murray in Zombieland, but I dont know if I'd really call that a cameo either. Its a great scene.

He was driving the Jeep full of Ammo as Easy was walking into the woods around Bastogne. He's the guy Winters tells "Were paratroopers, private. Were supposed to be surrounded."

Uh - maybe Downey got a "freakin" Oscar nomination...maybe.

(I triple checked - he did receive a Golden Globe nomination - but, the evidence is overwhelming that this was a larger cameo role - he just nailed it.)

And yes it is a cameo - when a $20 million per film star, takes what would have amounted to 8th or 9th billing and is not used in the promotional material to keep his participation a surprise (and this was NOT a situation where some actors don't like the finished product and try to get their name removed from it - e.g. Robin Williams in Baron Munchausen - though his attitude towards the film itself seems to have softened over the years) - makes this a satisfactory example of a larger cameo role.

He was originally supposed to be Peck (MM's character - Stiller's agent), but came up with the idea for a studio chief.

It's possible you're using non-standard definitions - I only watched part of Zombieland, but didn't Murray play himself?

Except in rare circumstances, such as biopics (Howard Stern in Private Parts, Audie Murphy in To Hell and Back) or documentaries, an actor (or other celebrity) playing himself/herself is a huge red flag for a cameo. If that actor/celebrity is not a major character in the film - bingo - cameo, as self.

My bad, Cruise got a Golden Globe. I stand corrected.

Meh. To me, a cameo is a small role by a big name star either playing themself/fictionalized version of themself or a character that normally would never be portrayed by that kind of actor.

From wiki
quote:

A cameo role or cameo appearance is a brief appearance or voice part of a known person in a work of the performing arts, typically unnamed or appearing as themselves. These roles are generally small, many of them non-speaking ones, and are commonly either appearances in a work in which they hold some special significance (such as actors from an original movie appearing in its remake), or renowned people making uncredited appearances.

Arnold walking by The Rock and saying "good luck" in The Rundown is a cameo. Charlton Heston giving the dramatic reading in Wayne's World 2 is a cameo.

Tom Cruise played a major character in the movie, that was far from small or brief. Yes it was atypical (and hilarious), but it was in no way a small role. Bill Murray as himself in Zombieland is more of a cameo than Tom Cruise.

Were splitting hairs here, I know.

If you want to argue that it was an ensemble cast - he was still not billed - and, by size of the role, he would have been below:

Stiller

Black

Jackson

Baruchel

Nolte

McBride

I disagree with your assertion it was a major role.
