it's probably because every act mentioned so far only gets hype from indie music fans/publications.
if you're not looking for this sort of music, you'll never have heard of it
I can understand that.
While slightly more popular than "indie" (because they are huge in the U.K.), but not quite mainstream, I'll nominate Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs. The whole disc is not solid throughout, but the first five or six cuts more than make up for the weaker songs.

Its definitely not a lot of what you would find on mainstream radio, which is fine by me because i cant stand radio.
I didnt listen to Indie until about 4 years ago. A friend of mine from Seattle made me two cd's and told me how this type of music had been blowing up in L.A./Seattle since the late 90's. The two cds she made me were Modest Mouse's "The Moon and Antartica" and Built To Spills "Keep It Like A Secret." I was instantly hooked...
A lot of times it just takes you finding out about a band and listening to them a couple of times to realize how great that specific type of music is.
Anyways, if we are talking about any genre of music, Id put two Old Crow Medicine Show albums in my top 10, "Tennessee Pusher" and "O.C.M.S.", and they are a country/bluegrass mix.

Great band! didnt start listening to them until recently. One of their songs made it to a video game. Everytime it would play, i would start jamming it, haha. So, I looked into the rest of their music and really enjoy it.

Good start.
I think the search is part of the fun. Discovering a great band is just a wonderful moment. You listen to tons of decent but not great stuff, and then you just stumble on greatneess. I still remember the first time I hear the National, for example.
Music is pretty personal, and I would like it if more indie bands were popular, but the way the industry works, thats not really possible. But I do like it when a band breaks through. Hell, I want everyone to like the Hold Steady. And I'm happy TV On the Radio made the cover of Rolling Stone.

That's cool. You like what you like.
Their sound is based heavily on the early 80s punk/techno/alternative movement (i.e. B-52s, The Clash, Sex Pistols, ATF).

I do love "Angry Mob" by Kaiser Chiefs. Fun song.
And while normally I think you like what you like, there are some bands who simply suck. If you like Creed, I am very sorry, but they suck.

Me too, it was a beautiful moment.
There is nothing like discovering what would become one of my favorite bands of all time.

Well said and I totally agree. I can still remember the first time I put In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (now my favorite album ever) into my car CD player and heard the opening guitar riff of King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1.

I wish I could hear Neutral Milk Hotel again for the first time.

frick Yeah!!!
Definitely my favorite by them followed closely by Still Life.
If you are counting 1999 though, Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory trumps all this decade.

Figured this would be a better place to post this than the OT.
This thread would have taken a whole different turn there.

And in no particular order....
I know this one will get bashed a lot, but it has some of the most radio hits on any album ever released.
And again if you wanna count '99
