re: Famous actors who essentially play the same character in every film

90% of actors essentially seem to play "themselves" in roles. That is, when you see them act, you see the actor not the character
for as many accolades as he gets, Jack Nicholson always plays himself
Very few seem to transcend. DDL, Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep are a few

Really? How can you defend Will Smith on this? He picks and chooses which roles he plays, and he always picks the easy ones.

But he doesn't always play the same character. How much did the guy on I am Legend have in common with the guy in Fresh Prince?

3 pages in and no Nicholas Cage yet?
Every movie I've seen him in, he talks and walks the same like he's the only one to save the world.

I'll take them one at a time.
Denzel Washington:
In which he played the exact same angry, intense black man he's played in everything else he's been in with the exception of, maybe, Flight. He was Alonzo Harris when he played John Creasy, when he played Eli, when he played Frank Lucas, etc. etc. The only movies in which I felt like he didn't play that same character were Flight and, to an extent, Unstoppable.
Will Smith:
Perhaps the most ignorant thing said on this board. His characters and his portrayal of them are different in nearly every movies he's in. Even his action flicks have different character portrayals (see I Am Legend and Independence Day). In each of the following he is an entirely different character: Ali, MIB, Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, Hitch, Legend of Bagger Vance, Six Degrees of Separation.
I will only grant you that occasionally he plays similar characters: I, Robot, Bad Boys, and to some extent Enemy of the State. But all of these are difficult sells, imo.
ETA: Will Smith needs to get some more love on this board. It's way too popular to hate on the guy and I, frankly, don't understand why.

Plus, this guy said Denzel Washington. So he lost most of his credibility there IMO.
Denzel is the shite but at least recently he plays the same character, it's just an awesome character.
I have not seen flight so I can't comment on that

I think people are confusing actors who play themselves with actors who can't act
I love Tom Cruise. I love most of his movies. He is a good actor. But he has the range of a carrot

Agree to an extent, but Raising Arizona is a glorious exception.

DW always plays the Angry Black Man
Training Day, Remember the Titans, The Great Debators, Man on Fire, American Gangster, Book of Eli, The Hurricane, Courage under Fire, The Bone Collector

Nic Cage CAN act
he DOES have range
however, he's long decided to "mail it in" so to speak regarding his performances to collect a paycheck.
He has so many bad performances that it really casts a cloud over some otherwise great, great peroformances

Agreed on this. That film was also early in his career before he had a clue that he would go on stray away from those types of films.
And he played a great alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas.

I'll say this. A lot of actors could take the place of Will Smith in his movies, and they could play the parts just as well. Denzel, on the other hand, is irreplaceable.

I agree to an extent. There was a stint there when he played some different characters like in Clay Pigeons, A Cool Dry Place, Psycho, and the Cell. But yeah, since Old School, I'd say he's played Trent from Swingers in pretty much every movie.
