I think another nail in the coffin is the huge popularity of day time talk shows.

A talk show is dirt cheap to produce and if you miss a day of Ellen chattering away it won't impact the next time you tune in.

It is a shame to see them go away. Soap Operas were a great training ground for young actors back in the day.

All My Children and General Hospital. A fraternity house full of guys cheering and screaming at the TV like they were watching porn at a bachelor party.

Some highlights:
Pre-teen Tad Martin discovering weed.
Estelle's pimp shows up and it's country boy Billy Clyde Tuggle.
Luke rapes Laura at the disco, and she leaves her fiance Scottie to marry her rapist (we never got over that one).

But the best was watching Dark Shadows with my grandma. She loved her stories and loved horror movies, so that soap opera was her shite.

I used to watch Days in college. I'd come home from class, microwave some Chef Boyardee ravioli and watch some of the best television to ever grace this country.

I had a buddy come over one day for lunch, and he was kind of incredulous that I'd be watching a soap.

"What the hell is this gay shite?"

Halfway through the episode his tune started to change. "Wait, who is that chick, and why does that guy want her dead?"

A week later, he was calling me to discuss the most recent episode.

I've watched maybe a total of 30 minutes of General Hospital, yet I can rattle off probably 10 characters thanks to two sisters who were obsessed with the show.

This right here.

I turned it on a couple of years ago. All the same characters with most of the same unresolved issues.

Lots of memories popping up from this thread. I watched Young and the Restless with my Grandmother since its initial airing. It’s the first TV show I have any memories of. There was a storyline where Paul gave then stripper Nicki VD - I asked my Granny what was VD and she told me it was another name for the flu. I got in so much trouble in school for telling this kid he had VD when missed a few days with the flu.

Chandler Massey, who portrays Will Horton on "Days," took to Twitter following the news to assure fans that the daytime soap opera isn't going anywhere.

"We’re not being cancelled," he tweeted Tuesday. "We are pausing production because we are so far ahead of schedule (and it saves us $). Days will still air during the entire hiatus, so you won’t miss anything!"
"Days of our Lives" reportedly shoots eight months in advance and has enough content to air episodes through next summer, while Sony Pictures Television and NBC decide whether or not the series will be renewed for Season 56, THR reports. If the series is renewed, the cast will negotiate new contracts and resume taping next spring.

We did the exact same thing at ASU in the mid-late 90’s! All of the fish we had in our tank were even named after characters from the show.

The egg wants to know what Belle is looking like these days. He remembers when the original left, they replaced her with a hottie for about two days, then put some bland vanilla bitch in the role permanently after that.
