Did anyone watch last night? Tonight is part 2.

That child really went through hell on earth. I don't know how she is a functioning human being after what she lived through.

She is poised, graceful and appears to be a pillar of strength. Incredible.

There's going to be a show on Lifetime on the 18th, also. I read that she participated on every part of it. She may be narrating it.

Watched like 5 minutes. It was extremely weird hearing her sister talking about listening to Elizabeth and the guy walking around the room and hallway. I know the little girl was scared but that's still a hard one to accept.

I'm not acting Billy Badass like 9 year old me would've beat the guy up but waiting a couple hours to alert someone, just hard to accept.

She was traumatized. She got up right after Elizabeth was taken and when she got to the bedroom door, she saw the man and Elizabeth were going down the hall. She got scared he would take her as well.

2 hours does seem like a very long time. I get that she was shaking and scared to death, though.

And the sister thought it might have been a gun at one point.

I can't judge the actions of a 9-year through my adult lens - I can't go back to that state of mind, but there is a good chance I would have curled up and cried like a pussy for a little while, too.

She womaned up to give a pretty accurate description of the dude. May God bless the family for what they've gone through.

There was a movie not too long after she was found and I think it was based on a book her parents wrote, maybe. It was a long time ago and she was still pretty young, then. I don't think it was her telling it from her view like the one coming up. That's the impression I get. The movie coming up is called "I Am Elizabeth Smart".

I watched it. Crazy stuff. Crazy how he was taking her into public and to parties. You wish she would have told somebody who she was but I understand that she was scared for her family's safety.

These kids grew up pretty sheltered. They had no idea what to do. I either read or heard last night that Elizabeth said they'd been told not to get in the car with strangers in school, but that was about it.

Imagine this 14 year old girl telling the creep that if he's going to rape and murder her to do it there because she wanted her parents to be able to find her body. I can't even imagine....

9 months of rape and horrendous sexual acts....

I just read her wiki page. She said she was raped 3 or 4 times a day during her captivity. I can't imagine...
She also says "dwelling on the past is not productive". I'd think in her situation that's easier said than done.

I have a couple of questions about the legal case. Does anyone know why it took 6-1/2 years to reach a plea bargain with the woman and why it took 8 or 9 to prosecute the guy? Was it all just mental competency delays? Also, why was it prosecuted in Federal court? I know kidnapping is a federal crime if you cross state lines, but I didn't think they left Utah. Maybe it was because they were camped on BLM, Forest Service or some kind of federal land.

I believe there were competency issues and even when he was tried, he sang during the proceedings and had to be removed sometimes, if I recall correctly. The woman got a plea bargain.

They took Elizabeth to California at some point so they crossed state lines.

The defense asked for way too much in a plea bargain like this.

So it held up for awhile in Utah courts, Fed courts eventually said gimme.

There was one that came out right when it happened. The only thing I remember is that the dad was like the worst actor I had ever seen. It was like he was intentionally trying to sabotage the movie. I thought to myself that no way someone would offer his B-Budget acting arse another role. Then I saw him in Spider Man 2

Definitely a plea bargain in exchange for her testimony against him. She got 15 years, w/ ~7 years credit for time served. She should be out soon, if not already. He got two life sentences, so he isn't going anywhere. Crazy or not, that guy ought to be put down.

I didn't realize they took her out of state. That would explain the federal charges. Thanks for the info.

She finished her federal sentence, then went to state prison in Utah to serve a sentence there. Her sentence expires in 2024, when she will be about 78. She has been denied parole once but has a re-hearing scheduled for 2018. LINK

The male kidnapper was deemed incompetent in state courts and sent to a mental hospital. The feds eventually decided to charge him and got him found competent after a long hearing. He went to trial on an insanity defense but was found guilty of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines with intent to engage in sexual activity. During the trial, he acted goofy and had to be removed from the courtroom several times for singing. Life sentence.

***

Ran across this. The little sister recalled in October 2002 where she had heard the kidnapper's voice, telling her parents, "I think I know who it is: Emmanuel."

The cops didn't take much stock in the evidence, being from a little kid who recalled it months after the crime about a guy she met once long ago.

Cops focused on some other guy, a handyman, who died of an aneurysm a few weeks after he refused to provide a confession. His wife later committed suicide.

The parents starting working the TV shows with a sketch and eventually got the tip of who the guy was. Cops then picked him up in March 2003.

This show is pretty intense. She's never had therapy. How is she this well adjusted? It's incredible. Good for her for taking something awful and doing good by helping other victims.

Hadn't the guy who kidnapped her done some work at their home? Roofing, maybe? I seem to remember that he targeted her specifically and was familiar with the home. Maybe I'm confused...

I do remember that when someone recognized her in town and called the police that she initially denied who she was. That poor kid's head must have been completely fricked up. I don't know how all the shrinks and counselors in the world could unscrew her mind.

The Smart case was like a short version of the Jaycee Dugard kidnapping. That a-hole held her for a crazy long time - like 19 years or something. How do you fix that kind of trauma?
