It seemed like such a big deal in the '84 movie, then next to nothing in these 2?
LOTR had faithful backstory introductions for all 3 movies.
World building seems to be lacking a bit in this one, but I get why Deni didn't want to try a beat for beat remake.

Finally saw Dune 2. Saw it in XD. It was fantastic, even better than Dune 1. The sound and visuals were incredible, and the writing did a great job filling in some gaps and adding some emphasis that was missed in the book
Only disappointing part to me was that Alia wasn’t born. She has an incredible scene in the book where as a two or three year old she talks mad shite to the emperor, scares the crap out of the reverend mother, then kills the Baron Harkonnen like a gomjabar. Then she escapes and goes to clean up the fight by killing the wounded

I was disappointed we didn't get that scene either. She was in the Lynch movie and was a memorable character for such a small role. I was also disappointed we didn't get the stuff about Paul teaching the Fremen to use their voice as a weapon. There was the scene in the Lynch movie with Paul blowing up rocks with his little voice gun thing, then in the final raid on the Harkonen base the Fremen were all using the voice guns. That was awesome.

Wife and I watched it last night. I thought it was a good, not great film. I agree with the poster that said it was very vague.

They did a great job adding emphasis to some moments, particularly the scenes of Paul in the south, and making Feyd Rautha seem really insane and murderous even more than in the book

I think the decision with Alia was a result of:
1. Denis condensed everything into a years time as opposed to the multiple years that passed in the book, so Alia couldn’t have aged into her character to face the empirium like she does in the book/Lynch version
2. A killer 3 year old oddly makes some sense when reading the book (I guess because you’ve already sat with and committed to a lot of the world building and material by then). For a movie that is focused on making these characters real and relatable, it would have been jarring as hell to hve a fully sentient 3 year old badassing around

Yes this seemed to be a big driver for it, or they condensed the timeline as a result of that change

As a book reader I understood everything, but I could see a lot of things being explained very poorly or lacking context if you hadn’t read the book

Source material is tough to nail and put on film.
Denis V probably one of the few in the game that could pull it off.

I thought the film was great, and I thought every major departure from the book helped it translate better to the screen.

I think he was trying to stick with the pace established in the first movie, hence the second picked up right where the first left off. For a general audience, the less having to ask people to imagine actions off screen in this world, the less exposition that has to be done (and the better the film from a show don’t tell standpoint). Time jumps in a 500 page book full of a lot of exposition and reporting of what’s going on (rather than explicit descriptions) come as a mercy of sorts. Time jumps in a movie I’ve paid to commit 3 hours to based on my enjoyment of the first would just feel like reliving Attack of the Clones

The first 2 hours of this movie was a snooze fest. Way too slow while also feeling rushed at the same time. The movie spent too much time on singular events that could’ve been done much quicker in order to widen the aperture to depict multiple events. It felt like everything was so linear. The last hour was better but it was way too rushed. The pacing of this movie is just way off to me. I liked Dune 1 better.
