This sounds extremely similar to that newish Netflix show.
Not beyond the most general of views. Umbrella Academy was about a group of kids with powers who were trained to be heroes, then went their own ways as they became adults but then had to come together to deal with the shite their "dad" left them.
Doom Patrol is about adults (most of whom are quite long-lived) who have been taken in by Niles (The Chief) to hide from the world and/or to help them come to terms with their strange abilities and the mental toll brought about by how those abilities have changed their lives. They were never brought together to be a team of heroes (and a few of them don't even want to be).

And that the Doom Patrol predates the Umbrella Academy by close to 40 years.

Man, the current episode was a real gut punch. Amazing how they can go from goofy to tragedy without missing a beat.

Just started this series. Through episode 2. Great so far. I knew nothing about Doom Patrol going in but it looks like DC finally got something right after numerous fails with their movie franchise.

The Therapy Patrol episode will leave you screaming WHAT THE frick like Robotman. I mean, shite, this series is fricking insane. I was watching it on the treadmill at the gym, which was a huge mistake. Jesus.

They did a Danny the Street episode. Full-on Danny the Street.

Was Danny the Street part of the comic series?

Yes. And they mirrored his story very closely.
I didn't notice Flex Mentallo in the episode. He's supposed to be in the Doom Patrol series and Danny the Street was where he first appeared in the comics.

Robotman calling Flex Mentallo “Captain Banana Hammock” is my new favorite thing.

My interest is starting to wane a bit. They were on a run of great, weird, slam-bam storytelling but the last two or three episodes it seems like it is meandering a bit. I'm nowhere near giving up- but hoping the pace and story picks up a bit.

Wait. I thought the season ended already???? That is awesome there is one more episode

I just watched the finale.
I laughed so hard through this entire series. It's so well done.
This is by far the best thing DC has put out in a long time.
If you haven't watched it, do yourself a favor and get DC universe streaming for one month at $7 and watch these 15 episodes.
This was the most original thing I've ever seen on TV, the characters' chemistry is amazing, the comedy is unexpected and hilarious, and makes recaps, narration one of a kind.
Just an amazing series. After this and Titans, DC has a real network building.
Swamp Thing is next, and if these two series are any indication, DC is back people

I just finished up the season and it has me back on board and looking forward to Season 2. The finale really was so damn strange, funny, and unexpected. I like the way the writer's are breaking the fourth wall and the tailored ways and characters in which they are doing it. Strange shite.

I'm still trying to fathom that we just saw the series that we saw. They took a James Bond from the 80's and a major film star from the 90's, some cable level actors and paired them with comic characters and plots from the self-referential meta era of superhero comics. There was such a sense of "I don't give a shite" as they carefully crafted this insanely entertaining season.
The series catchphrase is "What the frick?". And there were times when I sincerely, uncontrollably said that as I watched this season unfold.
The two guest-villain callbacks in the finale left me speechless.
This is the first time that I've given a shite about the Cyborg character. I always considered him a generic filler that Wolfman and Perez threw in so the Titans could have a black/tech member. The DP writers spent a lot of time and energy this season making us care about him.

I like the season overall but didn't really like the ending. It went from delightfully weird to just weird at the end. I have no clue where Ezekiel comes from and how he's been connected to all of this from the beginning. I always thought he was being controlled by Mr. Nobody. I know this show likes being weird, but I feel like we needed more backstory for him.

Loving everything from DC Universe so far. Looking forward to Swamp Thing. Only complaint so far is the ending to Titans season 1. Felt like they didn't come to any sort of conclusion.
Doom Patrol was a pleasant surprise. I had no idea what to expect but it was weird and amazing all at once. Looking forward to all the weird DC has to offer with this show.
