Seems like they've been making a concerted effort to tie this doctor in with the past doctors. All the references to the scarf, etc, I imagine are some sort of attempt to bring old fans in and connect him to the doctor(s) that older fans knew as a kid. Could also have something to do with the fact that Capaldi was a major fan as a kid, so now he gets his turn with Davros.

When Capaldi got to salute the Cyberman ghost of Leftenant Whatshisname is another example.

Or the whole 50th Anniversary thing...

Loved the episode. I would never have thought that they could do Davros in an interesting way. But he was less the caricature and more a real character.

The appeals to classic who really helped.

I found it interesting that at the end of his life, he is willing to arrange his own murder as a child just to prove a point and defeat the doctor.

I didn't expect the magicians apprentice to reference that Davros was really the apprentice of the Doctor. Davros learned how to survive and how to be ruthless from the Doctor, two traits that led to the creation of the Daleks.

The 50th anniversary was 2013; are they still celebrating?

I had never seen Genesis of the Daleks, so I watched it late last night and watched the premier again immediately after.

They probably should have told us that was required. It made so much more sense afterwards.

Moffat has said that he and the staff watched all the Classic episodes that the BBC still has before the 50th. It's only natural that they'd take some inspiration from those episodes.

- Moffat likes to troll his audience. He did it in Sherlock, and he did it again tonight.

- The Doctor-Davros stuff was great. At times, I wished it was just that for the entirety of the episode.

- Did everyone forget 'Asylum of the Daleks'?

- Michelle Gomez is great fun.

- The 'sewer' stuff was weird.

- Sonic sunglasses?!

- For a real rating, I'll have to watch the first episode and this one back-to-back

Not what I was expecting at all. I expected the moral quandary of what to do about young Davros to be front and center in the plot and in Davros' plan.

That said, I can't get over how great the Doctor-Davros scenes were. I've hated Davros as a villain since genesis Of the Daleks, but he was great.

Still love missy. She needs her own special.

Also really enjoyed seeing Clara as soufflé girl again.

Agree completely. Except for the "new screwdriver" - Everything about this episode was fantastic.

No updates?

Mild spoilers :

I thought it was a fantastic monster episode, as far as you can judge a part 1.

- well done ghosts, creepy. I let my little kids watch most episodes, but I'm hesitant to let them see this one. I don't feel like staying up with them when they are scared

- not sure what to think of Clara's attitude. Clearly the Doctor is unsettled by it. I like Clara but somehow don't trust her. I think missy knows something bad she will do or become.

- deaf commander was a nice touch.

- capaldi kills it, as always

- reminds me of some of my favorites- waters of Mars (might have been all time favorite without robot robot), 42, impossible planet. I don't recall any great 11th Doctor episodes similar to these, so it's nice to see this type episode again.

- great cliffhanger.

- the doctor going back in time to the landing of the ship was a nice nod to my favorite classic who episode, city of death.

- empathy cards!!! We have to see these again, please.

End spoilers

Oddly enough, they ran City of Death this week. Must not have been a coincidence.

Great part 1. I'm really stoked that they are hearkening back to the multipart episodes.

Clara is just...different. Is she overcompensating for Danny?

I've never seen City of Death. Going watch it now.

That was my first impression. But I wonder if something more sinister is going on. Missy kept implying this.

Spoilers:

The cards were awesome, especially when he said loved one/animal/pet thing he did.

His rant of excitement about being real ghosts made him feel more "Doctor"ish to me than his first season. It actually reminded me of Tennant and Smith when they got overly excited.

- The cards were awesome

- Great cliffhanger (even though I'm going to get annoyed if every cliffhanger this season is a character dying but not actually dying)

- Shouldn't HADS have sent the TARDIS off somewhere like in 'Cold War'?

- I love Capaldi's Doctor

- Three ideas on Clara:

1. Whithouse is once again off on writing a character
2. Getting Clara out of the Dalek messed her up in some way (inhibition, personality, etc.)
3. Clara's still in the Dalek (crazy fan theory I've seen, but it does fit with us not seeing her get out of it and the crew in this episode largely staying away from her - however, the projection thing was of her, not a Dalek...)

- I'm getting a '42'/'The Impossible Planet'/'Satan Pit' vibe from this episode

The interpreter is going to be the key to this whole thing. He's the only one who hasn't seen the letters.

Huh? The doctor would know. He saw her with the tank open. I'm not saying it's impossible. There's certainly precedent for something of this sort, what with a season of fake Amy running around. Maybe she's not in the Dalek, but a Dalek is in her. Missy said something about the enemy inside the friend.

Can we all assume that the doctor is inside the stasis pod alive?

- Breaking the 4th wall twice was weird

- Kind of an odd, out of left field resolution

- I love Capaldi's Doctor

- Cass' character was done really well over both episodes

- Liked the new theme.

- Really good creature design for the Fisher King

- Liked the detail on the fake city

- We have a main plot teaser

- Felt like a Tom Baker episode
