Totally disagree. If those two aren't huge draws for the MCU, then they just need to scrap the whole thing and start over.
Was it well received? Time will tell. It feels mixed right now. But it’s hard to argue Strange is not a big draw at this moment. He’s no iron man, but he’s holding his own.

Still early, but looks like the Friday number will have a huge drop. I agree that the reception seems mixed.

Initial draw was good though.
The drop off could speak to overall reception. Like BvS.

Even bigger drop than I thought
quote:
#DoctorStrangeInTheMultiverseOfMadness grossed 16.7M on 2nd FRI at domestic #BoxOffice, steep -82% drop
(vs #AgeOfUltron’s 21.2M, -75%
#CivilWar’s 19.6M, -74%
#TheBatman 18.6M, -67%), for a 247.6M cume.
Eyeing a 60M-65M 2nd weekend & a 65%-69% drop.
Eyeing a 380M-400M US run

Looks like Daniel Craig was supposed to play Reed

Fun fact, Krasinski wasn’t the first choice, the actor originally set to play the role was all set to shoot but when there was an uptick in COVID cases, he backed out as he was living in London and didn’t think the quick shoot wasn’t worth risk of bringing back COVID to the fam

Yikes.
That’s really bad. Feels like word of mouth was bad for this movie. This is a big fail for Marvel.

Disagree. A lot of bad movies make money. Avatar made a metric shite-ton of movie with an incredibly bad story, writing, and acting (with the best visuals of ANY movie EVER). The Star Wars Sequels (and prequels) made money. Money has little bearing on whether a movie is “good” or not, especially when that movie is part of a successful franchise.
I'm not trying to say money = good. Merely money = not disaster. Avatar was not a good movie. But it made a ton of money so now they greenlit like 6 sequels.
The Star War movies made a ton of money, but after the dud that was Last Jedi, the box office went down. Force Awakens is the highest grossing of the movies but by the last one it made half of Force Awakens. Now that is a disaster. After that movie Disney has scrambled about what to do with Star Wars.

With that Friday drop off, this is looking like a hype release, followed by disappointing movie. And that is an issue for Marvel because this was big in their plans going foreword. As of right now, I’m not seeing this as a total disaster, but a fail for Marvel. This is BvS type drop off. It shows comic nerds like us going all in on release (which I actually didn’t see this. I was not interested in having to watch Wanda Vision), and the general public not being very interested. It says word of mouth was not great. And it says Strange was actually a good draw, which means their brand is slightly damaged with a mixed reception movie. Like Thor 2. And they changed the entire direction of that character.
I don’t actually see Marvel deviating from their plan, but people are certainly asking questions right now.

It has 87% fans and 74% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. So not bad reviews, but every review you see says the same thing. It is underwhelming, which it really is.
This is one of the few Marvel movies I have 0 interest in seeing again. I think a lot of people feel the same way. A lot of people saw it opening weekend and have no desire to see it again. Add on that less than excited reviews and I think those that didn't see it will just wait for it to go to streaming.
I mean for the people that saw it here, who legit wants to watch it again even when it goes on streaming?

quote:Yeah I saw that. It seems like the audience score was boosted with the initial surge. Reception is not bad. It could be reception is “meh.” Which is also not great for Marvel. Money will always speak. And drop off says a lot.

quote:This is also a factor, but also word of mouth. Everyone I spoke to said it was a let down, ok, not that great, etc. And I didn’t want to waste my time watching an entire TV show to go see a “meh” movie. So I didn’t. That’s the kind of effect word of mouth has.

Meh, it’s a steep second Friday drop off, but Marvel movies are always going to command $200 million plus opening weekends, and with the combined effect of residual Post-COVID reluctance to go back to the theater, a $60 million second weekend box office is going to seem like the sky is falling. Even when a $60 million box office weekend would be gangbusters for other franchises.
(Residual COVID anxiety probably skipped Spider-Man No Way Home due to the character’s massively greater popularity plus the Holiday season giving it a bigger boost.)
In any case, Marvel will probably be happy if DS2 makes $1 billion worldwide, which it will probably still do.
Edit: I do think Marvel overestimated the amount of Phase 4 media exploiting the Multiverse they could release without it growing stale. It did feel like DS2’s Multiverse cameos were chewed meat after seeing the 3 Spider-Men team up just a few months ago.

I’m curious as to how your friends are judging this as a “let down.” Was this ever supposed to be Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Infinity War piece of artistry?
If you’re happy with the top 1/3rd of MCU movies, then this one would probably be a good theater experience.
I’d rank it as the second best Phase 4 movie. Behind NWH and tied with Shang-Chi.

No Way Home dropped 83%. It made 19 million it's second Friday. Doctor Strange is going to make 17 million.

It should cross 1 billion because Marvel remains strong, internationally. But they have to be disappointed with the domestic legs. A movie that opens with 187 shouldn't struggle getting to 400 mil.

NWH had no competition and the holiday season. MOM will have Top gun and Jurassic world coming up.

It did?! That’s frankly surprising. That’s even worse than DS2’s drop (81 percent).
But again, people seem to like NWH a lot and it made $1.8 billion. Seems to me that these box office drops are just par for the course these days and not indicative of any sign of audience apathy.

this to me was supposed to be bigger than that.
It’s not a disaster, but how many well received movies has marvel had since endgame? Seems like more disappointments than hits. It’s losing its luster to the general public. This one was supposed to be something that got people excited for the future. It did not accomplish that.

Well, I guess it depends on whose opinions you’ve been reading. Just a note, everyone pontificates about the “importance” of such-and-such movie. (Often times, if you read a review that says a movie is “important,” the reviewer is a slimy hack trying to get clicks.)
In any case, I stayed away from the reviews, had no pre-conceived notion of it’s “importance”, and came away enjoying the movie.
And yes, if inflation wasn’t taking a huge wet bite out of my disposable income lately, I would give DS2 another watch in theaters. I appreciated that Raimi was given a bit more free rein to put his visual stamp on the movie compared to other MCU directors.

And despite opinions on how important this movie was for marvel, I think we can all agree it was more important than one of their tv shows or an Eternals type of movie. Or a black widow prequel.
So, I would say by process of elimination alone, it was pretty important.
