Top 200 Movies We Agree Don’t Suck: 5 Years Later

Cheers to the greatest message board on the internet. Over the years we have cultivated a small, active and fairly wide spread community talking about film and television. We’ve had some fun discussions, some interesting discussions, some heated discussions and a lot of fun.

5 Years ago, we embarked on a small experiment to catalog what we thought were “Movies We Agree Don’t Suck.” We decided it wasn’t a “Best Movies Ever List,” and it wasn’t an “Our Favorite Movies List.” It sat somewhere between that discussion; it was a list that evoked the best of what film had to offer AND the ability of film to entertain. “We have a lot of different tastes and a decent amount of posters, that alone should level out inconsistencies. It'll be a mixture of the overly critical and some of your average ‘I just want to be entertained’ moviegoers,” as the thread once said. And I think that has stood with all of our lists.

So here we are. 5 years later, some new posters, more than a few new films, and probably some changes in our personal tastes. But does the idea still stand? Can we make a list that simply attempts to find the best of film, films that sufficiently connect with culture AND have consistent quality? This time, we’ll cast larger ballots, 40, and hopefully compile a list that is the double the size of the last one, at 200.

Without delay, let's get down to the rules, as normal:

RULES IN VOTING THREAD

**In terms of trilogies and sequels, only 4 film sets CAN be listed as one entry, that list is: KILL BILL, Trois Couleurs, Godfather I and II, and LORD OF THE RINGS. All other sets are separate films.**

I am also taking the list of volunteers for write-ups. You know the drill. If you love film and want to unleash your Shakespearean eloquence upon the masses, sign up.

In the voting thread you have 3 films that can count as 1 and in here you list 4.

I think the rule here should stand. Those are a good group of four series that should count as one film. They all work as one work.

Even Evil Dead has more variance in quality/intent. They should be treated separately.

You know, I want to make the Godfather folks accept Godfather 1-3. You just can't leave off a film in the trilogy and get the two best ones, that's crazy.

I think you can since the third was made almost 20 years after the first two. It was a cash grab. Actually, it was a prestige grab, given Coppola's career since 1980. Has any director done more to harm his reputation than Coppola? I mean, we forgive Polanski for being a horrible person, but Coppola just started making bad movies.

So true.

But Na I won't do that. I have a small feeling Star Wars People are going to want their trilogy as well, though.

I don't hate GF III the way a lot of folks do, but I'll disagree because it came out 16 years later so it was not made in combo with the other 2 in the same way that LOTR and Kill Bill were basically filmed as 1. Parts of GF I and II over lap and basically overlap and continue the same story, but are split into 2 films for time considerations.

The Godfather Saga (parts I and II edited together) predated GF III by many years.

T'was a joke.

Also, I know Godfather is going to finish at the top, it's just a way to bring it down. KIDDING.

The rules ask that we "PLEASE LIST ALL DATES of the films you include", but the example ballot does not.

ETA: And can someone please post the 100 movies list from last time? I can't find it. Thanks!
