I'm the originator of the One Director rule, and even I'm going to violate it for a list of 40. The reason I had it was for a ballot so small, I wanted more representation. With 40 slots, I can let in a second (or a third) film in by great directors. Though I still ask myself, "Does this director deserve a second film on my ballot?"

I don't like that rule, its your 40 favorite movies, not your favorite movies by your top 40 directors.
but I'm a director guy, it seems like my tastes fit perfectly into a couple of amazing directors, like Coens, Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Nolan, maybe a couple others.

It's either that or Halloween in the other Carpenter slot on my list, I have yet to decide. Halloween takes it now for being so damn influential.
Jsck Burton may win out though. I also debated putting In the Mouth of Madness and/or Starman on my list, both are underrated.

It's mainly a way to make difficult cuts. and it's a personal rule. It's like "would I rather have a second film by the Coen brothers on the list if it will keep Lumet off my list?"

The one director rule is a good way to, say, purge Rear Window because I have Vertigo and North by Northwest already o there (and then I cut NxNW, because I'm a heartless bastard)

I won't do it with a list of 40 all time movies. I did use it as kind ofa tie breaker for decade lists, in part as a way to include more movies

How are you guys coming up with your lists? Going through IMDb's top 250 (or a similar list) and picking out the ones you like? Basically, what I did was go through all the movies I own - I only buy movies I like, obviously - and added a few on my wish list. [Yes, I keep a wish list of movies I want to buy.] Most of my list comes from the '90s and 2000s because I just haven't seen many old movies.
ETA: One thing that stood out to me while making my list was how stacked 1995 was. Se7en, Braveheart, Apollo 13, The Usual Suspects, and Heat. Plus some others, I'm sure.

Honestly, I just "know" what my favorite movies are, if that makes sense. I don't need to consult a list.
Now, I did consult three lists (Netflix Ratings - 3900 movies, flickchart 2700 movies, and a personal excel spread sheet) to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I have an excel sheet of all the movies I own. Then I checked imdb to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything. There are some great movies I don't own (Wing of Desire, for instance).

I went through AFI top 100 10 years, then the nominations. Then went through best picture nominations and winners, then finally went through all the movies I rated on Netflix. got well over 100 films by doing it this way.

I'm down to 45 movies. Sooooo I'm just gonna do a top 45.

I just picked out the movies that stood out to me as having the greatest emotional and intellectual impact. So I picked things that were both subjectively powerful and had objectively good artistic merits. For that reason, I privileged more recent movies that have gotten to me over old favorites (like Ghostbusters, Raiders, Star Wars, etc. I love those movies and think they are great fun, my love for them has more to do with a history of affection than their deep impact). I'm assuming that the older and more experienced I get the more my taste gets honed.
I also tried not to let "influence on movie history" affect my judgment as much as possible. That said, some of the movies are more representative of what I like (sort of similar to Baloo's rule) than anything wholly definitive of that movie in particular.

Hey Freauxzen, quick question on how the formula works. Is placement stronger or the number of times it's mentioned the stronger influence? Like for instance, if one film is listed as #40 10 times, would it be more likely to make the list than a film that is placed as #1 in one list and never mentioned by another poster?

My understanding is that #40 = 1 point, #39 = 2 points, #38 = 3 points. . . #1 = 40 points. So, to answer your question, I think the answer would be no. [#40 (1 point) x 10] does not make the list over [#1 (40 points) x 1].

what I have heard is that a movie must be mentioned at-least 5 times for it to make the list.
so a film which gets 4 #1s won't get ranked
while a film if ranked high enough with 5 #40 will get ranked.
