Hence why they took a bunch of stuff off Max under cover of night

They're also licensing a bunch of stuff out to other streamers. Its why we have Band of Brothers and The Pacific on Netflix right now.

THEYRE CANCELLING WINNING TIME?! That show fricking rules

It was the main event for me. I wasn't sure if this was planned. Felt very abrupt to me.

But I coudl also see where they were running out of story runway, maybe. Did we really want to see the whole HIV Magic saga?

This feels a bit like how they did Deadwood and Rome. Only this was far more abrupt. I had no idea I was watching the last episode.

I give it about 5 years until it’s all reality and trash shows.

I can’t see them green lighting shows like The Wire, GoT, True Detective, etc. under Discovery.

I hope I’m wrong.

I think AppleTV is probably going to take over that "prestige TV" niche.

Who is the brain behind Discovery? Track record is reality shows? shite like Welcome to Plathville?

Guy's name is David Zaslav. And he apparently does not give 2 shits about whether something is good, just whether it is profitable. He was previously responsible for Discovery's transition from "science/ history adjacient entertainment" to "all reality TV all the time."

All of the streaming hubs are in eternal transition. We're not going to have one or more "great" streaming sites that remain that way for decades. And now that the cable channels are tied in, they'll cycle through stages of quality as well.

With Max the canary in the coal mine was the removal of "One Froggy Evening" from HBO Max. I don't think that erasing Michigan J. Frog from the service was anything but a frick-you harbinger of what was to come.

The ability of entertainment execs to frick up a good thing is incredible.

Clay Travis's article about ESPN really opened my eyes to things.

These execs thought that it'd be easy to go from cable to streaming, and now they are realizing that its not profitable for them, actually quite the opposite.

And these cable companies own internet infrastructure and services so its not worth it for them to frick with these networks anymore with all the cable cutting. Cable is how these big networks made so much money and got so fat over the year. Now these big networks are going to be left holding a big ol bag as they desperately try and move their formats to streaming.

I think that's how it was with most people. Not sure it was announced it was cancelled until the day after. I read up on it and apparently they filmed an alternate ending if they knew it was getting cancelled. That wasn't the episode they planned on airing. It was very abrupt. Just felt like a normal episode and then all of a sudden you're getting a recap of what all happened with the Lakers.

I loved The Gilded Age and Hacks so hopefully they don't get cancelled after their new seasons. Though the strike is delaying the release S3 of Hacks. Not many people on here seemed to watch it, mainly because most female driven comedies suck, but that show is hilarious.

Hopefully the new True Detective is good.

I don't see Discovery running them into non existence in 5 years like some have said, but they clearly are giving zero leeway for a show to struggle, even if it has really good reviews. There are going to be quality shows put out that just don't get the run time that you'd hope.

If it’s any consolation to you, my 81 year old uncle in Istanbul who is more aware of US entertainment than most Americans half his age thinks Hacks is amazing.

I agree that Max won’t be gone any time soon. However, under Zaslav’s reign, people are going to be much less satisfied with the new content that is being put out.

I have a theory that most viewers of bullshite like My 600 Pound Sister or “My Embarrassing Addiction: I Eat Cigarette Butts and Tide Pods” are not actively seeking it out. They just leave it on in the background on Cable.

And these execs are missing one thing in their calculation: passive viewing is infinitely easier under cable than streaming.

So I suspect Zaslav’s desired projects are going to do horrible numbers in streaming.

That is in fact a pretty good consolation.
