DirecTV or Dish Network
I’m very close to switching from DirecTV to Dish. Main reason is the monthly bill. My DirecTV bill runs $150/mo. I’ve done a fair amount of research on Dish Network. Unless I’m missing something I can get the same channels for $88/mo locked in for 2 years. Only thing I can tell that’s different is no option for the NFL Sunday ticket. Can some of you guys give me your advice on making the switch? I’ve been with DirecTV for 18 years.

I once loved Dish and its service but lately they have cancelled a lot of channels.

I have been with them for 15 years and thinking about changing

re: DirecTV or Dish Network
I have had dish for 20 years, but I only have a channel package, not any of the sports packages. They try to raise the price regularly, I just call, they tell me they have a promo they can apply, and my bill goes back down till that promo ends, then I call again. Rinse and repeat.

Next year I'm moving to a place with ATT fiber, so I might have to look at direct. Assuming I can call and complain and get my bill adjusted back down, I probably won't care to do it. If not, I might have to keep Dish.

Is your internet not reliable enough for streaming? I wouldn’t recommend Dish or Directv. Too many channels are being removed due to not contracts and not cost-effective when compared to YouTube Tv, Hulu Live, etc

re: DirecTV or Dish Network
I’ve told this story before on here but I’ll tell it again:

A few months ago I found out I could finally get all my locals on Hulu so I called directv mid billing cycle and told them I wanted to cancel, my bill was ~160/month and Hulu was $~60/month. The guy tried to ask me if there was anything he could do to keep me and I just said no as for some reason I was in a hurry. Anyways he says that’s fine and that my service would continue until the end of the billing cycle and I said ok

The next day a woman from the special retention Dept calls and asks why I’m cancelling, etc. and I tell her it’s just too expensive. She asks how much cheaper it needs to be and I said about $100/month and she said done and offers me free Sunday ticket for the year while locking in the price for 12 months. I have one of their highest packages and like 6 receivers so you might could get it even cheaper idk but the point is you can call mid billing cycle and “bluff” them so to speak and maybe get it down to $60/month without losing your service. If in a few days you don’t hear from them you can always call back and just say you changed your mind for whatever reason. Good luck

You didn't start low enough. I was going to switch to Hulu a year ago. Called canceled and some one from this same department called me. My bill was $140. I told them no when they offered it for $60. Said Hulu was $45 and its still cheaper than what you're offering. They then made my bill $22.62 for 12 months.

Flash forward a year, tried again and no go. Said I could only have that discount once. I have switched to Hulu and love it.

I had a similar experience. Called and said the service was fine but too expensive. I didn’t rant or threaten to quit; just asked for help on my bill considering how long I’d been a customer. Retention person called and we knocked it down about 50% for a year.

re: DirecTV or Dish Network
I recently switched from Directv to Dish. My Directv bill went from about $90 a month to about $150 a month. I called several times and the best that Directv would do was knock off $20 a month for 1 year. I was tired of playing the game to get a better price.

My Dish price I got is better than Directv was and I am locked into that price for 2 years.

A few positives for Dish.

1. The equipment is much better. The receiver is much faster and doesn't lock up like Directv used to.
2. Dish has voice commands. You can search using voice.
3. The Dish hard drive is much larger. You can record and save many more shows.
4. You can save your shows in folders. I have a folder to save my shows and a folder for my wife's shows. It makes them easy to find.

A few positives for Directv.

1. The picture is better. The HD picture from Dish just isn't as good. The Dish picture is not bad, it just isn't as good as Directv.
2. The GUI for the Directv equipment is more intuitive.

So far I am happy with the switch. The pros for Dish outweigh the cons.

re: DirecTV or Dish Network

A few years ago I would have said the best option is to bounce back and forth every 2 years, so you'll always be in the introductory rate period.

But since AT&T became involved, the answer is Dish Network.

re: DirecTV or Dish Network
I would call directtv and tell them you are cancelling and switching to dish, cite the $ amount they offered (maybe even go lower). I would be absolutely shocked if they didn't offer you a really good deal.

I called them a few months ago after my 2year intro period offer expired. They not only returned my rate to the intro period offer but also gave me sports pack and NFL sunday ticket free (which is what $300?). I know everyone hates on TV/internet companies but DirectTV I honestly cannot say enough good things about.

re: DirecTV or Dish Network
$150/month?!

That is a lot, to me anyway - though I've never had an issue with them, for now 17 years.

I have the choice package with HBO (though that is free, and with an additional discount - $15 - with ATT). I pay $79/mo. but I now have a $40 credit because I bitched and threatened to leave. They also took off some of the TV charges (2 of them - $14/mo.).

But I think this is as low as they will go. I've tried again recently and they said no. Plus, they used to give me NFL ticket each year but failed to do it this year. Pretty much told me to cancel.

I'm moving from ATT in a few months, so those discounts will go away - so I'm cutting the cable after that. I hope the NFL (and I've heard rumors) expands to streaming services soon - that would be a boom to them.
