I sure did. Linda Lavin, Polly Holiday (when pigs fly, Mel!) ... Vic Tayback. I kinda had a crush on Beth Howland, who was Vera... she was married to James Kimbrough who played Jim Dial on Murphy Brown.

I was saddened to learn that Philip McKeon passed away in December. He was Tommy on “Alice.” I never realized Nancy McKeon “The Facts of Life” was his sister.

A staple of early 80’s reruns for sure. Along with Different Strokes, Facts of Life and Lavern and Shirley, etc.

Required viewing. My mom loved that show.

I remember that he was related to Joe. I also remember he had a lot of personal problems/demons.

"Stow it dingy!"
Alice and Barney Miller are two shows I used to watch all the time as a kid and haven't seen in damn near 40 years. Would love to watch some episodes again.

There was a lady who sat behind us at Alex Box a few years ago that looked just like Flo, right down to the big hair.

My buddy once offered me $20 to yell "KISS MY GRITS!!!" as she walked by.

While she did appear to be a little bit younger in Alice than she really was, she was only 47-48 when Gremlins came out.

In the 60s, she was married to Michael J. Pollard - kind of famous for his "bully" roles (he was short and played younger characters for the longest time) - most of you baws will remember him from the Star Trek episode "Miri" (the leader of the rogue kids) and/or Scrooged (he was the homeless shelter cat who was hanging out with Anne Ramsey and her husband before he got himself frozen to death).

He just died last year.

ETA: Now that I think about it, Anne Ramsey's husband, Logan Ramsey, was in a Star Trek episode, too. He was the heavy in "Bread and Circuses."

Seriously? Of all the 70s women (Linda carter, Olivia Newton-John, Farrah fawcett) you chose Vera?

Not my cup of tea, but don't be so judgmental. I mean, the character was timid, shy and obviously pretty submissive. Some guys are into that.

I mean, everybody is into something a little different, which is a good thing. Otherwise, we would have to fight everyone off of grandma.

Many people don't know that the TV show Alice was based on a Martin Scorsese-directed movie, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, a movie which was Oscar nominated in several categories and won a Best Actress for Ellen Burstyn who played Alice herself.

Vic Tayback played Mel in both the movie and the TV show (though the movie Mel's Diner was in Tucson, not Phoenix). And Diane Ladd, who played the movie Flo (and was Oscar-nominated as such), later played Flo's replacement Belle when Polly Holliday got a spin-off show of her own entitled Flo
.

Weird how an Oscar-winning drama became a very successful CBS sitcom...

M*A*S*H took a similar route during that same era.

(ETA: And Ellen Burnstyn and Diane Ladd were world class actresses, which greatly elevated that early effort by Marty.)

Even though that episode flirted with being outright camp, pretty much all the way through, the acting in the episode was just stellar for television of the 1960s. The kid, Tayback, Anthony Caruso (Bela), plus the main cast, particularly Nimoy's Spock trying awkwardly to fit in with the gangster motif.
