Was John Malkovich’s character supposed to be foreign or was that him doing a La accent?
That terrible accent and idioms cracked me up
This line in particular stuck with me that I still use it every once in a while in a drawley shitty Cajun accent.

Malkovich is a great actor and Berg is a pretty good director which makes his accent choice even more confusing
The best part of the movie is an electrician or whatever Mark Wahlberg was supposed to be being heavily involved in the rig’s operations

I've been in the oilfield (production) for 30+ years so this was news that hit kind of like JFK and Elvis, in that I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing... I remember thinking 1) how in the hell can this happen with a 4-story BOP and 2) how can this happen with an emergency disconnect?
The oilfield is a very small world and when news of a fatality or catastrophic event hits, it affects everyone regardless of what sector you work in. It was a sad day.

the one scene that really broke my immersion
For me, it's when Mark Wahlberg, who's character is like the rig maintenance/electrician, gets off the helicopter on the rig and starts asking about the cement bond log (or something along those lines....been a minute since I've watched). He then heads up to the rig floor and starts asking about the wellbore activities with the company men and drillers. That would be like the HVAC technician in a hospital showing up to work and trying to discuss an upcoming procedure with a surgeon. Yeah, they both work in a hospital, but that's about the extent of it.

Not necessarily...
HVAC Tech: "Here, am HVAC repairman. In Russia, was surgeon".

Anyone that post here was on the rig? I’m sure there’s some good stories to share if up for it. Seemed like a disaster waiting to happen based on the movie. A lot of red flags ignored.
I was working at Weatherford when this happened and our float equipment was on the string. It's the equipment that prevents the well from back flowing. It never converted and that was the beginning of about 7 things failing, like in any major disaster, its never one thing. Our guys told them it didn't convert (its orginally run down hole in the open position and then converts through various mechanisms, usually darts to then not allow back flow) I believe Weatherford settled for ~40MM and admitted no guilt just to be done with it.

I was a lowly MWD then a DD offshore and the only time we ever talked to those dudes was to plug in our skid
Every rig manager/company man/toolpusher/driller/directional/mud engineer on rigs like that would’ve told marky mark to sit down and shut up

Always thought it was such a massive influx and pressure diff that the weatherford stuff never stood a chance

I've heard that the shear rams in the BOP were the test rams, not the production ones and were designed for one use during the test, and should have been swapped out.

Energy and chemical plants typically are filled with red flags, as a manner of normal operation. You realize how many people that post here are "responsible" for shite at plants? These are the guys in a double wide in Geismar with 2 Jetskis and a $70k truck out front.
Maybe you should give those boys a little more credit? They’re probably doing better than you…

That poster always tries to do some weird boomer mixed with SFP shtick

To be fair, didn’t he go to them with his buddy the OIM?

a movie that was about an event that wrecked the economy of an entire metro area in your state for an extended period of time
What "metro area" economy was wrecked by an offshore oil rig explosion??????? If anything the people on the coast made good money by being part of the clean up.
The idea that people responsible for the red flags at plants are "the guys in a double wide in Geismar with 2 Jetskis and a $70k truck out front." is idiotic. They have nice houses to go along with the Jetskis and $90k trucks.

Wonder where these assholes are now.
About 6 years ago I worked with one of the BP guys who was on the project and had to testify in court. The guy looked like he had aged 30 years since his court testimony.

This was the thing that drove me crazy. The electrician hardly knows where a rig floor is and damn sure wouldn’t be involved in the downhole operations.

Plus, many of the failures happening in the previous days/weeks were the electrician's responsibility IIRC..
