I woke up in the middle of the night, couldn’t get back to sleep, and watched this movie. What a way to start off the week. Not sure I’ve ever been so simultaneously pissed off and sad.

Similar, but I watched Girl.Lost. That's a depressing movie.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll stay the hell away from that one.

Would anyone ever watch that more than once?

Excellent point. Certainly not I.

I have, watched it alone and watched it again with a friend because I wanted her to see it. Another good one is "What's wrong with Aunt Diane".

BTW...
I haven't thought of this movie in many year, but...
I first watched it around 2009. I've worked at a couple of different places since. A favorite thing to do at my last couple of stops was to spring this film on unsuspecting girls at the office who have not seen it or heard anything about it. Of course I tell them not to read anything about it as it has a “surprise ending” that will be ruined if you read about it, how the movie is a love letter from a father to a son, etc.
They get all excited then the next day at work hate me. One girl watched it on her phone after I told her about it in the morning during her lunch break. No lie, she came back from lunch and left to go home an hour later – too emotional to stay at work.
I'm at a new place now and a girl just came by my office and reminded me how much fun this movie can be to spring on people unexpectedly. Let the games begin again.

So much depression. Then the lady that plays the mom was the IRL director who then sued the actress for releasing stills from the movie in her resume. So that girl was out there like that in that movie and then lost money making it.
So in the end it was the same as the movie. She would be promised but there would never be any gratification.
Horrible mother, everyone around her sucked, and you realize her choice was probably the only she had.
Sad.

I just googled this for a synopsis and found nothing but references to the Ben Affleck movie.

Because I'm an idiot.
Girl Lost is the title aka Nowhereland.
imdb linkK
Says 2016 but it's on the top lists on Netflix and Terrarium.

I don’t know if anything in my 41 years that infuriated me more than that movie.
