And it's not just about the high school lead being played by a 30 year old.

I can't tell from those posted reviews if these people just hate the movie or if they hate the story/musical itself. Like, is it a bad adaptation of the broadway musical or would they hate that too?

The lead is talented and has been in plenty of other stuff. The story isn’t my thing, but my wife really loved the play.

I’m curious if it’s defectors just don’t like the story or it’s Cats level bad of a musical.

Based on the tweeters posted, I’m not sure we’d like the same thing anyways?

Judging from the twitter pics of the reviewers…I might like the movie. Because they look like miserable people

That was a more direct way of saying what I was getting at.

Those people look like they’re upset that the lead didn’t commit suicide or come out as gay.

I’ll see myself over to the poliboard now.

These are the same idiots that watched "Les Mesirables" and complained that "IT'S SO SAD!!" when the title is the miserables.

Some of the negative reviews mention that what worked on stage didn't translate to film, and they put that on the director. Platt's appearance is the elephant in the room in most of the reviews.

This article breaks down the split in reviews.
quote:

Truth be told, the film's polarizing reception isn't exactly shocking. For all the success it's enjoyed on the awards circuit, the Dear Evan Hansen stage musical has long split Broadway and musical theater fans over the way it handles sensitive topics involving mental health and teenagers, and the movie adaptation is doing the same thing. Case in point, Marya E. Gates' review for The Playlist describes Dear Evan Hansen as "emotionally manipulative" and notes that "the film’s mental health treatment remains deeply problematic." Cinema Blend's Corey Chichizola, on the other hand, praises the movie for being an "emotionally exhausting drama" (in a good way) and feels it's "ultimately a moving piece that asks some tough, contemporary questions."
quote:

Interestingly, if there's one thing critics seem to agree on so far, it's that Dear Evan Hansen is far less visually striking than most other movie musicals. Some of this can likely be ascribed to the film being shot amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with Baron writing, "the sheer visual monotony of Dear Evan Hansen feels bourne out of an inability to shoot a full movie."

This movie looks utterly unwatchable.

I mean the trailer alone was cringe worthy.

By all accounts it is what we see in the trailers. A lead who has aged out of the role and is trying to land this role... and not pulling it off.

I love John Wayne but Wayne playing a teenager in the 1960s isn't going to work.

Though... "I'm hep cat. Give me some of those mary jane cigarettes." Followed by John Wayne trying to be stoned would be gold.

Yup. Saw the trailer for this and looked like something a overly dramatic sophomore in high school would watch and think it’s the greatest movie ever. But the Alphabet People hate it so maybe it’s legit.

In the trailer I saw earlier my first thought was to wonder why a guy who looks 30 is playing a teen.

Not sure how it will work as a movie, but I saw it live in NY. Second to the Saints winning the Super Bowl, it’s the most amazing feel good thing I’ve ever watched. And I’m only 2% ghey. Downvote away

It sounds like it's a bit of both. Platt's father is one of the producers or something of the sort, so there was no doubt that his son would play the lead, particularly because he created the character on Broadway. I saw it after Platt left the show and the guy playing Evan Hansen looked like a real teenager. It's a very polarizing show and it's definitely not a feel good experience. The character of Evan Hansen is deeply flawed and some of his actions are borderline sociopathic, so he's not an especially easy person to like.

Cats is specifically referenced in the avclub's review. The musical is beloved. Critics (in general) aren't slamming the story or its original play.
