I think Colbert would be a good fit. He has had several viral videos which appears to be important in the new late night wars. I don't think Stewart wants to leave the Daily Show, it's his empire.

How would Colbert work in a role like this exactly? Admittedly I haven't watched his show much, but isn't the premise that he's playing this super conservative character? How would that work in a late night role? His show now is basically just a parody of CNN/Fox News or whatever, so how would the Colbert "character" work as a regular talk show host? Does he ever break character or is he basically like Larry the Cable Guy now and lives it?

He would have to drop the Colbert "character" and just be Stephen Colbert. He has always had the character as cover so if anyone has been offended he can say it's his character. He won't have that net if he leaves the show.

Whenever Colbert has been on Fallon's show he has been himself. I think he would do really well taking over for Letterman.

I know his current show has the same time-slot as Jimmy's, but I don't think he'd go to the rival network and go head-to-head with his boy.

NPH is an intriguing suggestion because I had no idea he had any experience.

I think Stewart, Colbert, and Stern are already in their optimal medium. Moving over to a more mainstream form (much like Letterman moving from late night to the late show) robs them of their strongest characteristics. Ferguson can be great but overall he'd fail for the same reason Conan did - the hit or miss appeal isn't broad enough for a 10:30 show.

Wow. This thread is brutal on Letterman. He's not in his heyday, but he's still entertaining a few times a month(the most I watch 'late' shows).

I used to love Dave but he quit trying 10-15 years ago and turned in to a parody of a bitter Hollywood liberal.

Not that I'm a Fox News conservative but the blatant lack of even an attempt at staying above the political pettiness never sat well with me.

Still would watch him over Leno though.

Bump.

Per the OT, Colbert is being named as Letterman's replacement.

Should be fun to watch he and Fallon fight for viewers.

Love me some Colbert report but I have to wonder how he will play without his prime schtick Probably get me to watch a network talk show for the first time in a decade or so though. So it might just work for CBS.

Pure butthurt because he doesn't share their political opinions.

I don't share them either but it hasn't hurt the show's appeal (for me anyway). After Leno's history of leaving and not leaving, CBS should play this up to the hilt. Give Dave a huge sendoff, promote his status as the man who reinvented late night TV and then bring in the strongest contender for late night since Leno.

Colbert has stated that he will not be in the character. He's going to be himself. I like this move, as it frees him from the bit. It's a great comic bit, and maybe the best comic creation of the past 50 years, but it's got to be exhausting to always be in character. I'm curious how he does.

frick I love Colbert in character. I'm sure I'd like him as himself too but I'm just worried late night talk show comedy will ruin him.
