Episode 5 was excellent. This show is so damn good.
To have the dog eating the granny snatch and gator breaking down like that in the same 35 min episode is crazy lol.

Whole season has been good, but the last 3 episodes have been some of the best in the series.

Just finished it. Another fantastic episode. This is the best season so far, and it’s not close IMO. And I say that as someone who absolutely loved S1.
I hated the Gata character at first but I’ll be damned if he hasn’t won me over. Great acting by him in this one. And it was such a serious moment in an otherwise silly episode. And I also loved that the family they thought were racists, the mom cradled Gata in her arms and consoled him as she prayed over him. That was actually touching. And then in true Gata fashion he gets up and rolls on like no big deal.
The grandma was hilarious and the dog scene had me big laughing.
This episode has a weird, creepy, Texas Chainsaw Massacre type vibe, but also some humor and deep, touching moments too. Great episode. I’m not sure if Dave wrote this episode but if he’s still a main writer he’s great.

I would be very much willing to bet Santino wrote a big part of this episode. It vibes with a lot of his comedy and just things he said in interviews/podcast.
When the dad said the big girl was “doing splits on a rubber snake head” I almost died laughing.

That makes sense, it kind of had a Always Sunny vibe outside of the emotional part with Gata.
Dave and Gata tweeted that it was going to be one of the best episode yet and it did deliver. I think Dave said this week and next week are the two best episodes they've done.

The episode in season 1 where they talk about Gata’s bipolar is one of the best episodes of 30 minute comedy television ever. I don’t think this episode was that good, but it was great. The way the camera panned to Gata at the table when the father was discussing the cycle of depravity and lust modern music/dance creates was a solid foreshadowing to what was about to happen.

Man I really hate being the contrarian but I guess that's my role for this episode. Full disclosure: I'm not saying my thoughts on the episode are right and everyone else is wrong. I'm not asking anyoen to agree with me. I FULLY realize that I'm the oddball here but that's ok with me.
I didn't care for this one at all and the majority of why is because it paints Christian as well as southerners in such a retarded light. They had episodes earlier set in Georgia and Texas and both were perfectly fine. I guess to get nitpicky you say the dudes at the texas house party were weirdos but whatever. Now in Misssippi the 2 main takeaways we have are 1) people are total assholes as evidenced by booing the fat girl off the stage (I know it's part of the plot but that seemed pretty unlikely anyway?) and 2) this family is a backwards stodgy religious creepy people that shouldn't be taken serious.
First of all I don't know of anywebhre outside of backwoods, tent revival, snake handling, fake tounges speaking hillbilly type places where dancing or hugging is forbidden. They make it out liek Christians forbid anythign whatsoever other than sitting in silence and praying. Then they attack this family's worldview as being backwards, outdated, and wrong. It's a punchlin that's meant to be made fun of. But when you actually look at it...what has this family actually done in reality? 1) They welcomed in a group of strangers to their home during inclement weaether. 2) While this group is supposedly some old school backwards charicature, the group of strangers they take in consists of a rapper, a dreaded-up black dude, his hispanic sidepiece, and an asian. Doesn't matter one iota to this family and all are welcomed. 3) They invite them to their table and share dinner with them 4) When gata's girl runs off mad, the mom asks if he'd liek to make a to-go plate for her. this family which is the butt of jokes for the whole episode in reality is nothing but kind, open, and hospitable to this group that feels from the very start that they are better and above them.
Maybe I'm overthinking it. I'm sure I probably am. I guess just in today's modern culture of 2023 it seems there is a constant attack on normal, everyday, white, Christian, conservative, America-loving folks and this episode just kind of perpetuated that. How many people watching this show coast to coast have ever spent more than 24 hours in Mississippi? Probably not many, but now that's how they view the south.

It’s the lowest of low hanging fruit to shite all over rural MS Christian’s and paint them as they were painted in the episode

The episode maybe Dave seem like an absolute dick. The rest of the crew was telling him about trying to keep his cool and he absolutely couldn't. Even after his antics the mother still showed compassion. The big girl summed it up in her last convo with Dave that she was happy and didn't need him saving her, which is what the NE liberal types always feel they have to do.

I definitely get that and that's not really an oddball take. The crazy Christian story is definitely played out and is a Hollywood punching bag pretty often. I'm a Christian as well and throughout the episode I was laughing but also thinking man this is so backwards/messed up.
I felt like there was some pretty redeeming aspects though with the mom and Gata. The mom was the only person there that was actually able to give him some comfort and it was because of her beliefs. If someone watches that and doesn't take that depiction of Mississippi with a grain of salt then they are probably out of touch with reality anyway.

I was right there with your assessment through the first half of the episode, 100%. By the end of the episode though, my impression was that they actually did a good job highlighting how fricked up Dave and his entire entourage really are, and that weirdo people they deem beneath them(likely because of religion) are the most relatable, caring people. Meg tongue-lashing Dave at the dinner table about her parents and beliefs was kinda the turning point for me.
I go back to what I said earlier in this thread, this season seems to be really playing up the Dave is actually an a-hole theme. Seasons 1 and 2 had a lot of pity for Dave and this one seems to portray the opposite, more often than not.
I'm really diggin' it so far.
ETA: There was a point in the episode with Meg talking about Dave's music and how he takes the supposed narrative and flips it on it's head, something along those lines. That's kinda what this episode felt like to me as someone who's much closer to rural, Christian, Mississippian than entourage member of a touring rapper.

Exactly. IMO the whole point was that Dave and his crew were shite talking this family and making fun of them, and in the end they were just normal people with heavy religious values and ended up comforting Dave and crew in their time of need (well, safe to say the grandma is definitely weird
). But in the end Dave is the a-hole because those people weren’t racist really at all (hard to tell if the brother actually was or not) and even the daughter was happy with her life and didn’t need to be saved by Dave.
It seems like this season is kinda about Dave learning about himself, and sort of realizing he’s an a-hole as someone said.
