It hasn't held up well over the years, but then you also have to remember that Lucas pretty much made it on a shoestring. It certainly wasn't big-budget like it's sequels ended up being. And for what it was at the time, the production values weren't that bad.

ETA... I don't know if they qualify, but Ive never seen a Bond movie before my time. Ive only seen Timothy Dalton and later.

the horrible job Lucas does at writing dialog?

Too bad you couldn't get her to try Empire. Much better when Lucas isn't directing.

OK, I was going to refrain from commenting on the acting and dialogue. As an adult watching it today and not an 11 year old seeing it for the first time in 1977, I can feel your pain on that one.

Again, take into account Lucas's budget. Alec Guinness was the only proven actor in the whole cast.
