Do not really know if that is what you call a romance or Adventure movie. I'm not saying he's a bad actor at all but he seems to play the same inner struggle character or a type of masochism character in a lot of those movies.

well except anything in the comedy department. I think that what keeps him from that elite top level with me. Again, not saying he isnt' great, but has he ever tried to step out of his comfort zone for a role?

Who is elite iyo?
I mean I'm with you, I like my actors to be able to tell a joke and it not be painful to watch. Similar to how I give Jim Carey bonus points for being a dang good dramatic actor as well.

FWIW...it doesn't take great acting for comedy. It's all personality.
Drama is where acting skills are put to the test and Leo has passed with an A+.

Appreciation for DiCaprio may be a generational thing. I never really liked him until The Departed & Blood Diamond.
He just looked to young and wimpy for most of the roles he played before then.
I can understand younger people liking him but he didn't appear to be a legitimate bad arse until he got a little older.
After I saw The Departed I caught Blood Diamond and watched Catch Me If You Can and realized he was a good actor. In Catch Me If You Can, he looks like a kid but that's OK because his character is a weaselly little guy.
I know I'll get killed for saying it here but Gangs of New York is kind of like an aughts version of The Warriors because of the semi-ridiculous costumes. DDL's acting is awesome in it but LD still isn't mature enough for that part to me. He still looked like a kid and he just wasn't weathered enough to have been through all of that stuff.
Now that he's older he looks able enough to handle himself, I can believe he is a tough guy when he is cast as one.

& Blood Diamond.
Agree. His role in Blood Diamond was pretty incredible if you ask me. The way he held is own against the pure emotional juggernaut Djimon Hounsou was portaying was damn good.
That reminds me can we start to throw his name (Djimon Hounsou) into this

All I could think during "Blood Diamond" was how incredible sexy Jennifer Connelly looked.
I wouldn't mind snagging her blood diamond, if you catch my drift.

Leo is a good(almost great actor) but at the end of the day all his roles come off as Leo(same problem most on this list have).
Right. Including his time spent as Arnie Grape. Whatever. It really depends on how you classify "our generation." I'm 25. My generation of actors is totally different than a guy who is 40. Bale is way up there for my generation, but maybe not for a 40 year old. Regardless, Day Lewis, Hanks, DiCaprio, Nicholson - all of them are phenomenal. And I love how one can argue that they "never really become their characters." Right. Okay. Whose fault is that? The actor's or the audience's? I'd venture to say the audience who can't see Tom Hanks as anything but Joe, or Josh Baskin, or Forrest freaking Gump. I mean, come on, 3 iconic roles right there. Of course we're going to have a hard time seeing Hanks as anything other than "Hanks." Add to that the fact that actors' lives are so pervasive in media and it makes it even more difficult to see the actor as anything but the actor, rather than the character. Bale is just now becoming a serious leading man. In ten years, we'll have a hard time seeing him as anything other than Batman or some other iconic role. Just saying. Though I do see your argument for Pacino and Clooney. They play the same character in every movie, though. Hanks and Leo do not.
Sorry for the rant.

2. Christian Bale
3. Gary Oldman(he's a chameleon. can play anything)
4. Ed Norton

6. Johnny Depp
7. Leonardo DiCaprio
8. Sean Penn
9. Jeremy Renner(if you haven't seen Dahmer, the guy is nuts)
10. Robert Downey Jr.

Downey Jr. would be on my list with a few more great flicks where he's the lead.

It's cool. You make some good points and I had forgot about Gilbert Grape, but other than that my opinion remains the same. I'm 32 BTW, so I guess I'm right in the middle of your age examples. I was 18 or so during 'Leo-Mania' so that might have influenced my opinion.

I agree with this 100%. I think he's great these days, but it took a while for me to stop thinking of him as 'Teen Heart Throb Leo' and take him seriously. He still looks 16 to me.
And I also agree with the previous poster that said his opinion of Sean Penn makes it impossible to enjoy his movies.

So you are comparing Al Pacino to Sean Bean as an actor and Pacino loses this battle?
I hadn't thought of it like that, but yeah, I guess I am.
