DISH Network Corporation DISH -0.90% today announced that its subsidiary, Blockbuster L.L.C., will end its retail and by mail DVD distribution operations by early-January 2014. The company will close its approximately 300 remaining U.S.-based retail stores, as well as its distribution centers.

"This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer. "Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings."

The Blockbuster By Mail service will end mid-December and will serve existing customers until that time.

Over the past 18 months, Blockbuster has divested itself of assets in the United States, as well international assets, including operations in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. DISH will continue to support Blockbuster's domestic and international franchise operations, relationships and agreements.

BLOCKBUSTER'S FUTURE

DISH will retain licensing rights to the Blockbuster brand, and key assets, including the company's significant video library. DISH will focus on delivering the Blockbuster @Home service to DISH customers, and on its transactional streaming service for the general market, Blockbuster On Demand.

The Blockbuster @Home service offers over 15 movie channels including STARZ(R) Cinema, EPIX(R), Sony Movie Channel, and Hallmark Movie Channel, plus over 20,000 movies and TV shows streamed to TVs, computers or iPads(R). The service includes access to the Blockbuster @Home 'app' currently available to the millions of TVs served by DISH's Hopper(R) Whole-Home HD DVR set-top box.

Available to anyone, Blockbuster On Demand is a transactional streaming video service offering thousands of movies viewable on connected devices including PCs, tablets, smartphones, Slingbox, Roku and select Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players. Consumers can learn more at www.blockbusternow.com.

This is a beautiful moment of reaping what you sow. For those old enough to remember that back in the day most towns would have multiple video store options as well as "old ma and pa" video rental stores in more rural areas. As the early 90's came, Blockbuster would come into your town and push out every other option shutting down stores and many family business's. It feels good knowing that Redbox's and digital distribution have now done the same to them.

Blockbuster also put a lot of pressure on studios to jack up the price of DVDs to the ~$40 range. frick them. Just checked their website out of curiosity and it looks like they don't even have new releases for video games. Just a matter of time before they go under.

Nah...Blockbuster shut Blockbuster down. They are a perfect example of a well-established company that refused to accept that the paradigm had shifted in their industry, and refused to change or do anything about it until it was too late. If that company was in any way forward thinking (or truthfully, just not complete idiots), they could've adjusted their business model and likely survived. But they didn't. And now they're done.

There's one in Marrero right down the street from Helen Cox. Next to Popeyes.

This reminds me of the South Park Randy episode

Not entirely true. They were so loaded with debt there isn't much they could have done. I'm not sure anyone could have saved them once it was apparent Netflix and Streaming were taking off.

Look at all the cities way behind New Iberia. We closed ours years ago.

Get with the times, slackers.

They had the ability to buy netflix early on, but never thought the concept would catch on. The truth was years of treating customers like shite left the window open for people to choose any decent alternative. Streaming services just put the final nail in their coffin.

Did love going there as a kid to rent the latest games and movies.

Before that they had a brand and a distribution network.

I always wondered why they just didn't turn their storefronts into giant vending machines (like some Asian fast food places), then use the saved space for something creative. They had an opportunity.

they actually had a service very similar to Netflix. It was called Movie Pass.

You could go online and have them ship whatever movie wanted and you could either send it back via mail or bring it to the store to trade out. They were also looking into doing streaming and RedBox like kiosks.

when I worked there I would read the company trade magazine that came to the store.

My memory is a little hazy since I read this all so long ago but some rich arse dude was able to essentially do a hostile takeover by forcing his way on to their board with a few cronies and promptly put the kibosh on the whole program b/c he didn't seem the short term profit in it.

Part of his issue with it was the Movie Pass model ended late fees which he thought was money they should not have to give up. He forced out the forward thinking people in the company and that was that.

There is one in the heights, always people there.

Went in once assuming redbox had forced them to lower their price on DVD rentals.

Nope $4+

There's a Blockbuster still open in Alexandria that you can look at while you use Redbox outside the nice grocery store across the street.
