Not a superfan but Santeria and What I got were legit.

What? Two totally different sounds, feel, everything.

Of all bands I’d want to see a biopic about, Sublime would literally never cross my mind on being one I would choose. Is there some weird story that makes them movie-worthy that I don’t know about or something?

I liked Sublime a lot back then in real time, but I just didn't appreciate the complexity and skill.

I really like punk, reggae, and ska so I can understand if you don't like them you'd not like Sublime, because they mix and mash up all of those genres. At the time I just did not realize how rare it would be to be able to do what Sublime did with them.

Eh idk. Depends on how they tell the story. Just going from memory, I believe Nowells parents got a divorce and he and his dad who taught him guitar sailed together to the Caribbean where he developed a love of reggae/ska. Forms a high school punk band and end up on the cover of Rolling Stone. ODs fresh out of rehab with a newborn son right as their debut studio album hits #1

I caught them in Myrtle Beach in 1992 I believe but I could have the year wrong. He was totally wasted but his vocal talent was incredible. I use to have loads of bootlegs many iPods ago that have since been removed by the family I believe. They used some of the higher quality ones to put together the Everything Under The Sun compilation

Probably my fav live recording of theirs

I was a pretty big fan of them as I was massively into punk and ska during high school in the 90s. And yeah they were pretty unrivaled when it came to being able to write a ska punk song during that 3rd wave of ska. The production, arrangement, and vocals were of a different class than just about anyone and they were seemingly just getting started. So many bands continue to rip off their sound to this day.

I always felt Brad was probably a pretty sketchy dude despite his immense talent. Like the kind of guy who would get drunk at a party and then get belligerent and turn on some of the guests and try to fight them or actual slip some shite in a girls drink. Just kinda had that look that a lot of the sketchiest frickers I knew from work in westwego looked like.

Bizarrely specific yet random accusation about a guy with literally no accusations on him. I’d love to hear any weird arse conspiracies

Anything other than your “feelings” to back this up?

Relax man… sounds like you’re the one up in his “feelings” about a throwaway comment on a message board.

Not really specific or random if you listen to the lyrics of his songs (of which I own every single one). I’m just saying the guy didn’t seem that different from a lot of the people I interacted with growing up. It was believable he lived part of the life portrayed in a lot of his songs. You may disagree…that’s fine. I’m not accusing him of anything.

Sublime songs are just as great as they ever were. 40oz is one of the greatest debuts ever.

Well the lead man died right before their huge release and they went big. The album is pretty monumental, not just a couple hits but its very common among my generation to know it all the way through

His own lyrics paint him as a sketchy dude. He reveled in it

Everyone is getting a biopic recently. Hollywood is a copycat wasteland. My guess is that the attraction is low costs to make it. And for the record, I stil like their music, i just don't see how this story will be compelling.

One of their biggest radio hits is a play on a Beatles song.

IMO there is maybe a bit closer relation to early RHCP. But sublime was a lot of adding their vibe to reggae and punk songs they were covering.

I'm well-acquained. 99X wouldn't STFU about that addict train wreck before and after his death.

There's a more compelling story to be told about the Village People or Milli Vanilli. I can think of literally a hundred stories of musicians that would be more compelling than a throwaway band like Sublime.

Sublime’s songs still get played today and are beloved by gen x and millennials. To call them a “throwaway band” is insanely stupid. We get it, you don’t like them.

Im pretty relaxed Im not particularly invested in the topic outside of the fact that I was skater trash back in high school and was really into them back then. I only saw them live once but ive watched several docs about the band

Anyway I never got any sketchy vibes off of Brad or the band. Outside of juvenile punk band hooligan antics and drug use obviously. Their music was largely positive. I mean they turned a song about date rape into a major hit. And again with the Rodney King riots. Gwen Stefani glows when she talks about Brad and says he was just a really sweet guy

But who knows. I obviously didn’t know him personally
