The Dennis Leary show that ran 2004-2011.

The first 2 or 3 seasons were decent, then the writing was hit-and-miss for a while, and then I think the writers’ strike around 2007-2008 really sank the show.

The show’s handling of alcoholism, which is a major theme, is absurd and makes the show unwatchable by season 6. The characters are inconsistent, their motives are hypocritical, and Leary’s character is blamed for everything that’s not his fault and almost nothing that is his fault.

I had heard great things about this show and it never lived up to it, even in the early seasons.

It is a good laugh for three seasons. And cut it some slack, it was one on FX.

One of the first popular shows on FX that I can remember. Never saw the show before but I've had friends tell me it's good.

It was okay, but I always thought it would have been better if his cousin was still alive, and someone they both liked were dead, and he didn't see dead people all the time.

At least make it one way or the other and stick with it.

Up to season 5, the theme from the Gavin family is “We’re all dry and in AA and we’re going to force Tommy to stop drinking whether he wants to or not.”

Season 5 the theme from the Gavin family is “We’re all drunks and we’re happier this way. Hurray for Tommy and all of us.”

Season 6 the theme from the Gavin family is “We’re all dry again and the bad things that happened to us aren’t our faults, they’re Tommy’s, and we’ll kill him if he doesn’t stop drinking like we did, like 5 minutes ago.”

It’s senseless. And relapsing alcoholism is a really bad foundation for a dramedy.

My biggest complaint about the series. Could have done without that

I was in 9th grade when it came out and watched it live every night for the first few seasons. When I left for college i fell off watching it. Loved it in the beginning. Cmon Cmon is a great song.

It's fun for what it is. The acting was reasonably solid and many storylines were enjoyable.

The unevenness of the writing definitely hurt it down the stretch.

The real gem of that era of FX was The Shield, which I maintain doesn't get enough love in GOAT discussions. No show is perfect, but at its best The Shield was as good as Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, any of the usual candidates.

What is this suppose to mean? FX put out some of the best shows in the "golden Age" of television.

The Americans
Justified
Fargo
Legion
Louie
Terriers
The Shield

All are great shows.

it was good enough to me to watch it all the way through.

but as far as a recommendation i wouldn't say it is a must watch.

I’m rewatching now with my son and forgot how great it was. I remember it being good, but now I’m putting it at tier 1. Incredible cast of characters. It does get a bit too depressing in the later seasons though.

Was thinking about doing a binge but based on this thread I probably wont.

Is the Shield available on any services?

I think The Shield is on Hulu streaming package, you don't need the live TV service. A lot of FX stuff is on there

Yes, available on Hulu. I’m in the process of binging The Shield now (about halfway through season 6 of 7).

Highly recommend it. I watched it here and there when it aired originally. Chiklis is fantastic, and agree with earlier poster that it’s as good as anything that’s been on TV the last 20 years.

That's a nice opinion. Here's my retort:
