He knew his father and should have had the presence of mind to insure Wallace's safety at the meeting through men loyal to him and not his father. That tired speech: "I will never be on the wrong side again" came too late to save Wallace. Hell if he was sincere, he would have found a way to rescue Wallace. Translation: Robert the Bruce was a wimp and shitty leader who let his father dominate his life with underhanded politics.
