I think late 80s doesn't have the same nostalgia as say 81-86...that's really the heyday that everyone thinks of now with probably 84 and 85 being the peak. 88 and 89 kind of had that weird early 90s feel to it and hair bands had taken over music. Pop singers were also getting that really shitty late 80s sound and getting away from the fun, earlier sound. The fashion had changed, the Reagan era was basically over, and the gigantic pop music icons were all on their followup or beyond albums that obviously weren't as good or as big.
It's obvious that the first half of the decade had so much more impact on how we think of it...just look at all the stuff that hit pre-1986.
Thriller
Purple Rain
Like a Virgin
Beverly Hills Cop
Goonies
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Both Star Wars
85 Bears
Born in the USA
E.T.
Karate Kid
Ghostbusters
Cosby Show premiere
Back to the Future
Etc, etc, etc,
Hell, half of those events probably happened in 1984 alone. For my money, it's the peak of pop culture and maybe American society. The world had yet to go off the deep end as it did once the internet and cell phones became widespread. You had just enough technology to feel super advanced, but not enough to take over your life.

The 80s were my decade. Looking at this from a pure child perspective and not an adult.
#1 is Michael Jackson and he lands here by a huge margin.
#2 Mike Tyson came in late, but was the biggest bad arse ever.
#3 Harrison Ford - Coming off Star Wars and right in to Indiana Jones.
#4 Duran Duran rocked the rock scene. Many huge 80s bands, but Duran Duran loomed large.
#5 Madonna was an inspiration to many young girls and wet dream of many young boys.
#6 Bill Cosby was an icon and the first black family many white people knew. Regardless of current issue, he did more to advance the African American population than he gets credit for.
#7 SNL crew produced so many good movies. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, etc.

The biggest star of the 80's was cocaine...... and it ain't close.

Jackson loomed huge over any other entertainer. Anyone saying different did not live the 80s.
I am not sure we will ever see the popularity of Michael Jackson ever again in the world we live in. It is kind of like we will never top the the final episode of M*A*S*H. There is to much diversity in the world now. MJ united a whole country into Pop Rock.

Off the Wall cane out in '79 and owned the charts into the 80s. 4 top 10 singles and 20 million albums sold.
Then he made Thriller
It's MJ and it's not even close

Mizzoubuckeye is off by a couple of years on his Michael Jackson decline. He was still HUGE and widely admired during the time of his "Bad" album. He had started to change his look through surgery, but it wasn't crazy looking yet. Now near the turn of the decade the more different his appearance became people started wondering "wtf is with that dude?" But he was extremely popular, even in the USA throughout most of the 80s.

If Mike Tyson is on your list, Bo Jackson probably should be too.

But you go to Europe in 1990 and people are asking you: "you like Michael Jackson?" And you're like, what?
One of the resorts I go to in the Caribbean still plays his music constantly in the restaurants (background) and has a "Michael Jackson Show" once a week

In Belize a few years ago the guys who took us snorkeling were really into Whoomp! There It Is by Tag Team, as if it had just come out. When they asked us if we liked it too, I thought it was a joke. Eventually it dawned on me that their enthusiasm was real and they thought it was a new song that had just dropped.

Breaking it down to the different industries -
Music - Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna.
Movies - Harrison Ford, Molly Ringwald, John Hughes
Sports - Hulk Hogan, Mike Tyson, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird
TV - Bill Cosby, Michael J Fox(lot of movie crossover), Phil Donahue, Eddie Murphy(lot of movie crossover as well, but saved SNL)
Michael Jackson was king of them all. Nobody else was even close.

A very solid list... imo the 80's were the best decade ever... I would add Clint Eastwood to the movie catagory... everything he tried turned to gold....
But I agree Micheal Jackson is on a different level than everybody else... it started at the Motown 25th anniversary brodcast.... the whole Jackson clan was on stage and finished a song, all left the stage except for Micheal... his Bills Jean performance that night propelled him from pop star to mega star.....

80's entertainment stats with Michael Jackson. Everyone else is way behind.

I loved GNR too, but that didn't take away the popularity of Michael Jackson. Hell, Slash was a HUGE Michael Jackson fan and played on several of his albums and appeared at many MJ concerts.

Michael Jackson is easily 1. I'm not sure if his world stardom will ever be matched again.
Throw Lakers/Celtics in there as well.
