Can I be the first in this thread to say that I liked Phoebe? She was definitely my least favorite on the show, but there were times that her character made me laugh.

I agree. She was easily the weakest of the six, but I still mostly enjoyed her. My only gripes with her and Joey were when the writers literally made them borderline retarded..that's when they were the most annoying. But that happens on lots of shows (similar to Michael on the Office at times).

All sitcom characters tend to become exaggerated caricatures at some point.
The Office is a great example with Michael and Dwight especially. They morphed into a bit of a parody of how they started.
With Friends Joey was supposed to be dumb and Phoebe weird and they morphed into retarded and batshit nuts.
BBT has done this as well, of course.

Friends sucks, it's so hokey and lame. BBT is at least occasionally chuckle-worthy. They are both only good for leaving on as background noise.
I will say, Cuoco was loco hot in season 1, but quickly fell off after that. Rachael stayed hot consistently throughout the show, so she takes the cake.

Bernadette just nags Howard all the time. Penny struts around like she's doing Leonard a favor by being with him, even though she has nothing going for her really. Leonard has had mulitple opportunities to upgrade. The show was better when they weren't together IMO.
Agree totally, especially about how the show was better when they weren't together. The "will they or won't they" angle with Leonard and Penny is so played out and tired that they really need to go in a different direction.
I can't count the number of times this past season where the episode was:
- Penny wants to be more committed to acting
- Leonard silently disapproves
- When confronted, Leonard is too honest, offends Penny
- Leonard apologizes in the end and shallowly supports her
Seriously, both of those characters are just terrible now. Leonard has had a chance with a number of better and more compatible girls (i.e. Sheldon's assistant) and he's lovestruck by a waitress with failing acting ambitions who is dumb as a rock. I can't stand the way they always have Penny acting like Leonard's lucky just to be with her.

I've enjoyed Big Bang Theory. I wouldn't say it was my favorite show but I get a chuckle out of it from time to time.
I enjoy the comic book references and especially the guest stars like Stan Lee, Will Wheaton, Bob Newhart, Bill Nye, etc. And I'm no scientist but I enjoy the science references as well.
It's a show that is not populated by "pretty people" as much as most t.v. shows, including comedies.
One thing about the show is that none of the characters are really likable. Sheldon is a pain in the arse. Raj is actually pretty obnoxious when he does overcome his social anxieties. Howard was a total jerk about women before Bernadette and then he became whipped. Penny really doesn't have many redeeming qualities apart from her looks. And Leonard is probably the worst. His passive aggressive shtick is not in any way positive and his woe is me attitude is not really warranted given that he has been graced with so much female companionship some of it smoking hot.
Now whether it was an intentional and brave decision to show the less appealing sides of all the characters or whether it just came out that way, I don't know. But it does kind of set the show apart from a lot of other comedies
I still probably give Friends an edge. But I don't dismiss BBT as readily as a lot of people seem to.

My only beef with Friends is that all of the characters, with the exception of Rachel morphed into caricatures as the series went on. It's like the writers latched onto one aspect of each character and drove it into the ground.

I never considered Leonard being the worst, but you may be spot on.
He's the one of the group that is the most insecure in who he is. He constantly needs validation in both his professional and personal life. He acquiesces to whatever Penny wants just so he can gain her approval, starting with the very first episode with getting the TV from her boyfriend's place. He tries to hide his hobbies from Penny so that she thinks he's cooler and shames the other guys for participating in said hobbies.
He never explains what he likes about Penny other than her being hot. When he finally gets Penny, he turns into a smug douche. One of the few good Leonard moments is when he is on the "non-date" with Penny and he makes her pay her own way for the movie and meal. She even told him that she enjoyed him being confident and sure in what he wanted but then he reverted back into the pathetic guy willing to do anything to get in her pants.
Yeah, Leonard sucks. They had a chance to make him it a more self-assured guy but haven't developed his character at all since the beginning.
EDIT; I forgot, that little fricker ruined Sheldon's experiment at the North Pole just so he could get back home to Penny. I would've kicked that turd out of my apartment. Some friend.

Wow my thread morphed into 3 pages of total show comparisons.
I really just wondered if Estelle from friends just got old and no longer "camera talent" but the voice was funny so they used her.
One guy out of 3 pages gave an answer.

Love both shows. Friends was hilarious when it first came out. The same jokes that was on Friends then, now would not be as funny. The same with Seinfeld....if you could erase the memory of Seinfeld and replace it today with the same show, I dont think as many people would think it was as funny.
