I have been watching re-runs of Bewitched lately and Aunt Clara is one of the best characters on that show. It is a shame that she passed away in the middle of the show being on TV.

All her scenes are just classic.

I worked with someone who was nice but would babble and screw things up and apologize profusely and my boss said, "She's an Aunt Clara." The younger people said, "Who?", but I knew exactly what he meant.

I read somewhere that the actress playing Aunt Clara was actually suffering from senility and a lot of that confusion was not acting.

She was around 85 when on show. She was born in 1883. So I could see that.

Alice Pearce, the first Gladys Kravitz, was diagnosed with terminal cancer before she took the role on Bewitched. She didn't tell anyone and only made it through two seasons. She won a posthumous Emmy for her performance.

She had some of the best timing and persona for any show like that. She was the prototype for Coach on Cheers, IMHO.

We shouldn't laugh, but The Major from SOAP was a similar kind of a character (really bad dementia, far worse off than Aunt Clara or Coach) - just stole the scene every time. They could have built an entire show around just him (and Benson, but Benson got his own show, anyway, albeit with a significant change in tone.)

The show carried a decided "health" curse, with Alice Pearce, Dick York and Marion Lorne during the run (Pearce and Lorne dying, and York's health problems forcing him off the show), as well as the relatively high profile deaths of York, Sergeant and Montgomery in the early 90s, all in their early 60s. Moorhead died in her 70s and Lorne in her 80s, but Paul Lynde, probably the most high profile "supporting" actor from the show died at 55.

So, as cursed as A Family Affair or Different Strokes? Maybe not, but it's close.

Funny...we have a neighbor that my wife and I refer to as Gladys Kravitz.

While looking for that, I decided you can't honestly mention Bewitched and NOT mention how incredible Elizabeth Montgomery was...

Her cousin was hotter.

BTW, the story goes that she looked and acted so differently as Sarina, that some of the crew thought it was a different actress and were hitting on her (and her husband was the Director, so they were playing with fire).

My grandfather was born in 1880. Married late and didn't have kids until he was in his 40's. Lived to his 90's, so I knew him the first 13 years of my life.

Those folks grew up around Civil War veterans, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (which passed through Louisiana a few times) were babies when Billy the Kid and Jesse James were around, and were kids when Butch and Sundance were in their heyday. Plus: Spanish American War, WW I and II, etc.

Roger Sterling before Mad Men was every written.

They had to give him a drink when he visited, so he'd think he'd had too much, if anything crazy happened.

Easily first TV crush.

But you had to be sick or just play hooky to watch the early morning syndicated re-runs.

Absolutely right. I was about 6 when this show was on the air and I even knew Elizabeth Montgomery was hot. Whenever Serena came for a visit (EM in a dark wig) I didn't know what to do with myself. I'm getting a chubby 50 years later just typing about it!

ETA: And now I'm seeing Serena pics. My memory isn't defective. Serena was sexy with just the right amount of skank.
