They were basically the same character. Which did you like better?

I liked Data better because he wanted (and tried hard) to be human.

They weren't remotely the same character.

Spock was more influential as a sci-fi character, Data was allowed far more room to grow over time.

Everyone knows Spock..Even the non-Sci-Fi people have heard of Spock. Only the Sci-Fi Junkies know Data.

Data was very Special, but he's no Spock

Their goals were totally opposite.

Data was far more interesting as a character IMO.

They were not. Spock was half-human who desperately tried to embrace the Vulcan half while suppressing the human half.

If anything Worf is closer to Spock in execution than Data.

Data is the opposite side of the coin from Spock.

The truly outstanding supporting characters (at least crewmembers) in Star Trek are Spock, Data and the Doctor. As much as I like DS9, the real underlying strength there is the civilians (particularly Garak and Quark) and the antagonists (Dukat, Winn, Weyoun, the Jem'Hadar, etc.).

But, to answer your question - since (real) Spock is the best character in the universe, he's obviously better than Data (which is no slight to Data).

Depends on what you're defining as better.

Spock- dramatic grand story arcs perfectly acted with restraint and grace

Data- easily digested series long story arc perfectly acted with character engagement and humor

This says it all. "Better" depends on what you're using as measurements.

I like Spock better, but I've only seen a four episodes of The Next Generation, and I watched them this week. I've been alternating between Farscape, Defiance, and The Next Generation trying to get my The Expanse jones satisfied.

The Expanse and The Next Generation don't have the silliness level that these other shows have.

Can anyone recommend more serious sci-fi shows to watch.

I would continue to watch The Next Generation and add Deep Space Nine if you haven't seen it already.
Also I'm an huge fan of Stargate SG-1 and would recommend it too.

Deep Space Nine may be the best of the franchise. It was one of the Pioneers in serialized TV instead of the typical "monster of the week" stories you see in the self contained episodic TV. It took a good season or two to get the principal characters settled in and even more importantly the most robust assortment of recurring characters ever assembled in a SCI-FI show. By the end of Season 3 when the Dominion story line was implemented and Worf joins the show as a regular is when the show is firing on all cylinders. This show would be my recommendation.

Both are great characters but Spock is iconic. This scene alone wins it for Spock.

DS9 is one of the most underrated Sci-Fi shows in history. All for the reasons named about characters and story arcs. Also, Garak might be the most underrated character in Sci-Fi History. I love the interactions between Garak and Quark

I haven't seen Deep Space Nine, but I put it in my Watchlist. I put Voyager in there too, just because of Jeri Ryan.

ETA: Have Stargate in it too.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Thank you all.

They had a great interaction on TNG discussing this very issue.
