I have never watched it, big Star Wars fan so I do like the genre. What should I start with first?

Did you just compare Star Wars to Star Trek?
Mother of god!
And Star Trek's ships would get owned by every single ship in the Star Wars universe.

I just started awhile back. I've watched the first 8 movies and quite a few episodes of TOS and TNG. I'm not necessarily watching a the episodes in order cause they're mostly non-related. And of course I've seen the two new movies which is what got me started on the first place. I like it alot and I'm a big Star Wars fan. Star Wars still better though.

Be sure to start with The Cage followed by Where No Man Has Gone Before as each of these was a pilot for the series and had different characters.

I by no means compared them other than making an example of liking the science fiction genre. What movie is the best to start with?

Star Trek on television > Star Trek movies. Find a list of the top five or ten episodes and watch them first.
If you insist on the movies, just star with the first one.

If you watch the movies, at least watch Space Seed from the original tv series as it gives the background for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

If you have Netflix, the best place to start IMHO is Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 1, Episode 1. You don't need to have watched the original Star Trek with Shatner to understand it at all (although Star Trek nerds have this civil war about which series is better).
Do not watch the movie Star Trek: Generations until you have gone through at least a couple seasons of Star Trek: TNG or you won't truly appreciate "Generations."

Never understood who designed "shields" in the Star Trek universe. Ship always gets blasted wide open after 2 shots.

Though to be fair, the only "ship" that even has a shield in Star Wars was the Death Star. I distinctly remember R2-D2 getting blasted in one shot in A New Hope.
ETA: Even the little pussy shuttles in Star Trek have shields.

My thoughts:
I'd start with The Next Generation (preferably after the first four or so episodes). Then after watching a season or so of TNG, I'd mix in some Original series with that. After finishing these two, probably Deep Space Nine and maybe Voyager.
My reasoning is that while I love The Original Series, it is a bit dated in places and I just think The Next Generation might be a better introduction. And the reason I'd skip the first couple of episodes of TNG on first watch is because I think it took them a couple to hit their stride.
I was never a great fan of Enterprise. And the movies are hit and miss. The conventional wisdom is that the even numbered ones are the better ones (If I'm remembering right). But I'd probably wait till finishing TNG and TOS and maybe starting on DS9 before going to the movies.
Just my view though.

I started with DS9. I've actually watched TOS in spots as its a tough watch IMO.
I am like halfway through voyager S1 but stopped watching to start X files. I'm in Season 6 of X Files and after I finish it I am probably going to try and finish Farscape before I jump back to Voyager.

Get access to the original series.
Watch Space Seed, City on the Edge of Forever, and Mirror Mirror.
If you don't enjoy those, do not watch any further.

Watch City on the Edge of Forever
Then Space Seed and ST II: The Wrath of Khan
Then Devil In The Dark (Shatner's favorite episode)

Maybe for TOS but TNG, Deep Space, Voyager and Enterprise all have underlying arcs which could be a bit confusing without proper context.
You don't have to watch in order but I believe the experience would be better.

Its like if a Jedi faced off against those firby creatures that Kirk likes so much.

Star Wars ships are big and bad, but they seem to have no answer for transporter technology or time travel. Even cloaking in SW is probably minimally effective, as we never see it put to use in the major battles.
