Dave Chappelle - in my lifetime no one's close. For What It's Worth and Killin Them Softly were unrivaled. GOAT.

Richard Pryor, with Bill Hicks on his heels.

Norm Macdonald in my opinion
ETA: Chappelle is right there too.
And I could watch Richard Pryor's best work and not laugh half as hard as some one off Norm Macdonald silly joke. Come at me. Add Carlin to this.

Carlin. I grew up on those HBO specials.
People I wish we had more of to properly rank them would be Greg Giraldo and Patrice O'Neal.
Also I have to admit that I don't feel the Chapelle love. He is good but I prefer the Chris Rock specials (Bigger and Blacker and Bring the Pain) over the Chappelle specials.

Richard fricking Pryor
quote:
I'd like to die like my father died... My father died fricking. My father was 57 when he died. The woman was 18. My father came and went at the same time.
quote:
I'm not addicted to coke, i just love the way it smells
quote:
Being sober, and being off drugs, too, it's a strange feeling. And I get real scared when I'm out here sometimes. I get real nervous about it. I wanna frickin' run! You know, I look out there, I say, "shite! IT'S SCARY!" And I say, "frick it. Go through it. Just feel the experience. Just frick it".Cause if I had some drugs and shite now, I wouldn't give a frick. But then I'd come off stage, I still wouldn't give a frick. Then, by the time you're fifty, after a lot of not giving a frick, you miss part of your life. They'll say, What happened to your life? "I didn't give a frick."

No way too pick just one, but currently out there Louis CK and Bill Burr are just on a different level than everyone else.
Those two are my personal favorites.

I'm not that crazy about Chappelle's standup either. It's funny but it wouldn't be as funny if it wasn't? Dave Chappelle from Chappelle's Show. Now we know he's a piece of shite but Bill Cosby Himself is still one of the funniest and most polished standup specials I've ever seen, and he didn't use the padding of current events/political subject matter. Pryor is pretty much the Hendrix of it

Bill Burr for recent and Carlin for old. Damn would I love to see what Carlin would say to PC crowd of today.

Chappelle is probably the best natural talent. i dont think comedy is something you can be the best at tho. they all have their own styles, they can be just as hilarious. if you show a random person Louis CK they will be hesitant to buy into it for the first 20 or 30 minutes. Bill Burr is fricking hilarious but his presentation is still a little rough.
fortunately i really dont care who is the best, i enjoy all 3 and listen to everything they come out with.
gun to my head i'm gonna pick chappelle because of his show because his show was during my prime

Bill Cosby Himself
Saw this about 10,000 times when I was a kid. This was probably my first introduction to standup comedy, and still one of my favorites. I'm willing to bet many in here don't know what you're referring to though.
My three favorite stand up comedians, Dave Chappell, Rodney Carrington, and Jim Gaffigan. I doubt they would be considered the best of all time.

Red Skelton was the best I ever saw in person.
Bob Hope was very good as well in person.
That are a number of older ones that I would have like to have seen, but Fred Allen stands out.
Richard Pryor was great, how many here know is act was almost the same as Bill Cosby's? When Bill hit the big time, Richard had to change his act and came up with the one you see on youtube. His original had no cuss words, and was mostly stories of youth and clean jokes.

Bill Cosby Himself is my all time favorite as well. But, you can't have a discussion of the best without at least including Eddie Murphy. I mean Delirious and Raw are right up there. Maybe I'm just showing age here or something, but I can't believe no one mentioned this yet.

Carlin. Giraldo would have been it probably, but RIP'd too soon.

Steven Wright - was perfect for my sense of humor anyway.
George Carlin is probably a more logical choice and I loved his stuff too.

I realize Andrew Dice Clay isn't for everyone, but his stuff was hysterical. Most sets were constructed well and his timing is amazing.

Loved the chappelle show, but could not make it through the netflix special. Louis ck or Chris rock

I agree with Chapelle, but since he hasn't been mentioned yet I'll throw out Mitch Hedburg
