There's really not that many films strictly about professional football if you think about it.

Some, like The Longest Yard, I wouldn't even consider a "pro" football movie. It's a prison movie.

Off the top of my head, I'd say the contenders are:

Any Given Sunday
The Replacements
North Dallas Forty
Heaven Can Wait
Leatherheads
Invincible
Semi-Tough
and Jerry Maguire

My sentimental favorite is Heaven Can Wait, but the best of them is probably Jerry Maguire (if it's even really a football movie, to me it's more of a relationship movie set in the NFL world.)

Decent call, but I'd say it's more about pro football fanhood and mental health. It's why I didn't think Big Fan qualified, either.

It’s definitely more about pro football fandom, but there really aren’t any movies that focus on that aspect of football, so I think it’s def worth a mention.

It’s also just a great little movie.

Number One. For the old home town

Charlton Heston in a Saints uniform. Plus Al Hirt, Danny Abramowitz, Doug Atkins, and Monty Stickles.

Can we count the one season of Playmakers as a movie?

The website for the show is still up, and linked below. The site makes 2003 look like a long time ago.

Playmakers was great. The NFL shut that down with a quickness.

As someone who is younger, I think Jerry Maguire is one of the most over rated sports movies of all time. It is a chick flick labeled as a sports movie to con men into thinking it is something worth watching.

It may have been great when it was released, but it has failed to age well.

This says: Playmakers - Season 1 Complete! on YouTube

Looks like only the first four episodes here: ESPN: Playmakers Episode 1 "Gameday" on YouTube

1: Gameday
2: Piss Man
3: The Choice
4: The Choice Part 2

I agree that Jerry Maguire is basically a glorified Chick flick set in a sports world, but it's in no way overrated.

I watched it just a couple weeks ago and I always said Rain Man was Cruise's best performance of his career, but Jerry Maguire is just as good, if not better.

Hes perfect for the role and the script and all around cast are perfect. It's a great, great, great movie.

There's a reason cable channels still play the film often 25 yrs after it came out.
