I remember a guy I knew bought a $4000 sub-woofer years ago...and he always used Jurassic Park to impress people.

I mean, you could literally feel the ground shake during that night scene when the T-Rex breaks through the fence and goes after the cars.

Its reboot virtues aside, 2014 Godzilla had great sound design on 'Ziller and the Mutos.

When I bought my Sony w/Dolby Surround Sound system (pre-digital and pre-DVD) with a sub-woofer in the 90's, the easiest VCR tape to throw on to impress was the opening of Backdraft. That opening with the trucks blowing their horns as they leave the station was loud and clear.

Other VHS tapes, in addition to ones that have been mentioned, that had that great Dolby SS:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Lawnmower Man
Unforgiven
Dark World
Dark City
Robo Cop
The Color Purple
The Natural

I actually had people in apartments complain about my sound when I watched movies that had this at the beginning. The Audience Is Listening
I always tried to play that as loud as a theater did.

When The Matrix and a few other films came out, I had to break down and buy a DVD player.

I am guessing none of you are over 30. JAWS. The ignorance and youth and youth on this board is somewhat a joke. Start a thread that states any opinion of any movie or tv show cannot pre- date 1996.

Wtf sound (foley or effect) in Jaws are you talking about?

The OP paid homage to the 40yr old film that set the bar.

Kubrick was great at it too - For me The Shining was the best.

Over 30. Jaws is one of my favorite movies but not because of the sound effects. That makes no sense.

Outside of the movies already listed (SW definitel best), Oblivion has great sound.

In high school my dad got a surround sound system and a 60" TV (back when they were like 4 feet deep ) My friends and I blasted the shite out of Jurassic Park (especially the end T-Rex roar when the banner floats down), Braveheart, T2, and Last of the Mohicans. Good times.

Not best but....

Doom 2 "Icon of Sin" final boss spawn cube sound FX has been used in tons of movie and TV shows. Very distinctive and I hear it all the time.

I hate the swooshes when swords are swung and the sounds when a boxer is punched in film. That's not what it sounds like in real life.

Agreed. It Spielberg and Lucas are basically the standard bearers for modern movie sound effects. And of course they combined on the Raiders pictures.

The talent of that American Zoetrope crew of guys -
-Coppola, Lucas, Spielberg, Milius, Basil Pouledaris, etc-- is mind blowing.

I always liked the sound in Batman 89. From the sound of steps in the alley to the fat cop talking.

Maybe not THE best sound effect, but that loud tripod sound in 'War Of The Worlds' gave me goosebumps when I had the surround system cranked up. I always thought it'd be a great stadium effect for the home team, but I guess not enough people would be familiar with it...
