The Fellowship of the Ring. I felt like it was the most well-paced of the three. I also felt like the performances of the actors, particularly Ian McKellan, were superior to those in the other movies. The score, the cinematography, and other technical aspects were also superior. The Extended Edition also has tremendous re-watchability which I can't say for the other two.

Fellowship - Gandalf and the Balrog

I sat in the theater with goosebumps thinking movies were invented so this scene could exist.

Doesn’t have Theoden’s balls on fire speech, therefore, can’t surpass Pelennor Fields.

I watched 2 of the 3 ( a freaking trilogy ?? ) , and refuse to bother watching the 5 Armies mess.

Fellowship for a number of reasons, many already listed.

Most importantly, Fellowship is the only one of the movies that made me feel transported to a fantasy world. The green grass and bright colors of Hobbiton, the fading Autumn of Rivendell, the bleak empty black of Moria. The latter 2 movies were dingy and dirty and visually boring as all hell.

The interplay of the characters, especially the 4 Hobbits, sparkles in Fellowship. Once everyone separates it is a grim, morose affair (hence Jackson's decision to introduce dumb comic relief to break up the sullen monotony).

I also agree Gandalf the Gray > Gandalf the White, Strider > Aragorn, and frankly I never gave 2 shits about Rohan in either the books or the movies.

Wasn't most of Gandalf vs. Balrog at the very beginning of Two Towers? He is caught and pulled down at the end of Fellowship but we don't see him kick its arse until TT.

Overall FOTR

Best action?

Two Towers. Battle of Helms Deep is still the best fantasy battle in Movie/TV history.

Then Aragorn commits his second great blunder in the movie.

When the deeping wall was breached, Aragorn had the high ground and Elves with superior bowmanship at his disposal. Aragorn should've never surrendered the high ground with a suicide charge, rather he should have cut the Uruk Hai like cord wood in the opening in the deeping wall.

Aragorn's first great blunder was being sighted and surrounded by Eomer's Eored.

I agree with this.

My only true gripe is how Elendil and Gil-galad are only used as a cameo.

That’s not what happened.
