I just watched The Green Mile on 4K disc last night. That is by far the best 4K transfer I’ve ever seen. Blows everything else out of the water. Also, fantastic movie.

No doubt. 4K streaming is unreal, but physical media will always look better because it never ever has to compress its picture quality.
On the PS4 you could turn on the info and see the bit rate coming off of the disc.
It was way more than what you'd see watching Netflix in "HD."
I haven't done that for 4k, but I'm assuming it carries over.
I'm sure streaming will catch up eventually but it's not there yet.
Having said that, you gotta be something of a video/audiophile to care or notice.

Yeah bluray will give you uncompressed lossless audio. Streaming (even if it is Atmos) uses compressed audio. Though you'd probably need more than a soundbar to really hear a difference.

I haven't seen many 4K movies directly from disc, but the first one to make a big impression on me was Allied (2016) with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. There was a scene at a cafe and I remember being able to see individual threads on Brad's jacket. I was so impressed with the detail that I looked it up. Allied was shot on RED 6K cameras and downsampled to 4K.

I later checked out a 4K rip of Allied (I don't know how the rip would compare to modern streaming) and the thread detail was lost. You definitely need a 4K player to show off the capabilities of your big screen.

I think if you have the right setup (surround sound/tv) you can easily tell the difference. Or maybe I’m just refusing to admit that I have become an audio/videophile

Great movie that I don’t ever plan on watching again. If I get that Blu-ray it will stay wrapped in plastic.

If there's a 4K version of Ben Hur, check it out. Watching it on TCM right now, and it's pretty clear. The sound is spectacular on the $200 soundbar surround sound system in my bedroom. Should be on either HBO Max or TCM's site to stream in letterbox format.

The detail could have been lost when it was ripped/encoded or during playback. UHD blurays can have a bitrate up to 144 Mbps. So you'd need to have good and very consistent wifi for playback. Even if you hardwired everything, you'd need gigabit through the whole device chain to get the max bitrate. Alot of media devices only have 100 Mbps ethernet and normally you'll get nowhere near the maximum speed.

The race scene will put your surround sound to the test.

If you have good speakers or a soundbar with a subwoofer, Blade Runner 2049 is an eye and eargasm.
