I don't really like the redemption concepts either.

Same redemption island (the plot device) sucks. I think the season itself is solid.

The only time I liked the redemption island (or similar) twist was in Blood vs. Water, when they added the swapping places twist to give it some extra strategy.

Season 26 episode 5 spoiler below
I'm 5 eps into 26. Holy shite what a whirlwind episode! Its the one where brandon just completely melts down, ruins camp, then before immunity challenge gives some rambling speech, gets heated and Jeff has to play mediator, and they decide to not have the challenge and just do an impromptu tribal council on tbe spot. Damn that was a wild ride. Idk how the rest of the season will play out but that was about the most entertaining sequence I can recall seeing yet
Also props to Jeff, he handled that perfectly. I wonder if that was just instinct ad a great host or if they have SOPs in place for something like that. Also if Brandon were to lose it and start trying to fight do they have like "security" or something that would step in? Probably not but I'm sure camera people wouldn't help and most of the tribe mates don't seem like they'd be much help

This was from an interview with Jeff after the episode.
quote:
PROBST: There were a couple of moments when I was concerned. I was concerned early on when he first separated from his tribe and addressed the fans. It was clear that he was very upset. That’s why I asked him to come to me, so I could separate him from the rest of the contestants. Then later when I saw him getting more agitated I put my hands on his shoulders in an attempt to help him relax. It was probably also a bit of a head start on controlling him if a physical confrontation were to ensue. Because something like this had never happened before there was no plan in place. I was assessing moment to moment, making decisions based on what was playing out in front of me. I can share with you that I was whispering instructions into my microphone (which is fed to our audio department) for our safety and security guys to be ready to assist if necessary. I was also asking for our show psychologist to be put on a boat and brought over immediately so she could counsel Brandon after the incident was over.
I had decided pretty early on that we were going to have an impromptu Tribal Council. It was clear that Brandon wanted out of the game, it had been stated that the Favorites were going to forfeit the challenge and there was nothing good to be had from letting Brandon go back to camp. It was important to me that Brandon felt heard and knew that I was not taking sides, I was just asking questions and trying to calm the water. I was very proud of Brandon for making the choice to stay next to me and not turn this into a physical altercation. I was equally proud of Philip and the other contestants for their restraint. It was obviously a historic moment from a show point of view, but the overriding concern was the mental and physical health of the contestants.

Awesome thanks for sharing. The security head for survivor must have tbe easiest job ever. Hang out in an island setting for 20 years and only have to spring to action almost once lol

I always thought it was pretty irresponsible of Survivor to have Brandon back on the show. He showed glimpses of mental instability his first season. Nothing good was going to come out of him being back on the show.

Yeah, but crazy sells sometimes.

"The Sandusky"
That family has the crazy gene. Russell has been able to keep it somewhat under control.
But, Brandon on Survivor and Willie on BB, they just go completely off the deep end.

I didn't know there was a third Hantz out there. I wouldn't be surprised to see Russell on Survivor again one day. I know he is supposedly banned but I feel like he would get huge ratings if they ever brought him back.
I watch some of his videos on YouTube and he seems a little more relaxed now and aware of what he needs to do better if he were to play again.

Me either. I think Russell got in trouble for allegedly spoiling some seasons.
Would love to see him back, but I can't see him going far at this point.

quote:He allegedly leaked the boot order and challenge winners for Samoa and HvV but that apparently was known prior to him being on s22 so I think they would bring him back especially if the rumors of an all legends season 50 is true. Can't have a legends season without Russell.

Wouldn't that be 5 years from now? Would they already be putting out feelers for cast now?
Also what constitutes a legends season?

quote:I wouldn't be surprised if for some people they started early to lock them in. Some people they will want back probably have no desire to play without being incentivized. It's all hearsay though, we may never get a legend's season.

quote:It's hard to define because it can mean different things to different people. Wouldn't mean just winners, it would include challenge beasts, and memorable characters as well. I would prefer only 1-2 winners on both the men and women's side. I have a dream cast put together that I would love to see just from my perspective but who knows.

Wow, super late to this thread, but I'll pump up the first 15 seasons as probably the best.
I think All-Stars may be the worst of the first 15.
I love Amazon and Pearl Islands as such an evolution of the strategy of the game. Marquesas's winner shouldve been on Winners at War imho. Australia and Africa are just so different than anything else they've ever one (Toncatins being the obvious exception) creating beautiful visages that really imprint on the game.
There's something pure about the first 7 seasons.
Palau and Panama are also extremely fun with good winners.

You have to have some winners for it to really be a Legends season. Otherwise it's just another Second Chance, but I agree there are a lot of "legends" that never won. Russell being one big example.
I can easily think of a few dozen more, but don't want to spoil the OP.
Posted on 9/19/20 at 8:40 am to LSUBoo
Yeah there's a list of like 40 players that could easily be considered legends. I would only say limit the number of winners because most of the legendary winners have played 2-4 times anyway.

quote:The only way I can see you feeling that way is if you watched from when the show first aired. I know there's a lot of old school nostalgia and bias from early watchers. The game play is just so slow and rudimentary that for a binge watch it's just boring the majority of the time.
I'll pump up the first 15 seasons as probably the best.
quote:Wild take. It's one of the worst winners they've ever had from an entertainment value. Not only was this person unliked by the cast and the public, but he/she was also extremely boring. They would never bring that person back.
Marquesas's winner shouldve been on Winners at War imho.
quote:I will agree with this and want to say that I don't think the first 15 seasons are bad (two are in my top 12). I would recommend anybody to watch those for sure. Even Thailand has its moments.

So I went through this very recently, ultimately binging through the first half of the series (seasons 1-20). Had never really watched the show live so maybe that skews my take but here is what I would say regarding the first 20:
Best season: Heroes vs Villians (20) Not much more to add as its generally agreed upon by most as a top 1-2 season.
Next best season: China (15) I loved this season, loved the cast, loved the location, just a great season from beginning to end. Includes an all time final tribal council performance to steal the win.
Next best season: Amazon (6) A really underrated season in my opinion anchored by a really underrated winner and the "best survivor player to never win" bringing an intense strategy focus to the season.
Next best season: Tocantins (18) Really fun season with some really likeable and entertaining personalities, plus a great season long alliance.
Next best season: Palau (10) A tale of two equally strong halves, the first built around the unique tribal warfare and the second built around a great alliance trying to keep from splintering apart.
Next best season: Micronesia (16) Mentioned plenty above, just a really strong season especially once you get past alot of the fans who ended up being fluff.
Other strong seasons include the OG (1), Australia (2), Africa (3), Vanuatu (9), Panama (12), Cook Islands (13), Samoa (19).
Worst seasons for me were All Stars (8), Fiji (14), and Gabon (17).
The rest range from decent enough to solid.

Just finished 26. Not as good overall as the others I've watched but still enjoyable. I know I'm picking and choosing what seasons I want to watch based on recommendations but it's hard to believe there could be seasons out there that ARENT enjoyable and entertaining.
Season 26 SPOILERS below...
-cochran clearly deserved to win and Im glad it was a unanimous runaway decision. Sherry was essentially furniture and I liked how people at the final tribal interview didn't even ask her any questions ha
-brendas speech towards dawn..my Lord. It was ruthless but in a good way, basically making her own up to her words. Brilliant and ice cold.
-once again a plethora of attractive ladies on this season. Survivor definitely does that well.
-i really like cochran a lot. Not the biggest or most physical or most anything really but just played a solid game from the jump
-at first I hated phillip but then he grew on me only for the entertainment value. It was hilarious watching him pretend he was commanding a special forces unit into battle while everyone else just rolled their eyes at how silly it was
