BBC has a duty to be 'woke', says head of drama Piers Wenger

The diverse super heroes and what not is understandable, I guess, but making historical literary figures and 16th century members of the royal family black is just weird and has the feel of a bizarre social agenda.
quote:

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, said it would be a “dereliction of duty” not to insert prominent black and female characters into adaptations of literary classics.

Some viewers questioned why the BBC’s recent A Christmas Carol had created a significant role for Mary Cratchit, played by black actress Vinette Robinson.
quote:

Wenger said: “I really object when I hear the word ‘woke’ used in a pejorative way because what does that really mean?"

"If it means quality being important and fair representation being important then yes, absolutely that’s important to me."

"Diversity in portrayal matters hugely and it would be a dereliction of duty if we didn’t own those particular initiatives.”

The BBC will continue its policy of “repurposing for a contemporary audience” books written “a long time ago” because they “need to speak to a contemporary world as well as being stories about our past.”
quote:

dereliction of duty
what duty?

That first downvote is for Blueboy, not the non-story.

Maybe black people should write their own books. Problem solved.

The duty is to push "multiculturalism" aka globalism. Part of destroying the idea of a nation is destroying its culture.

This sort of shite is dumb and serves no purpose.

This was inevitable. For about 3-4 years black actors have been complaining that the BBC's penchant for historical drama naturally excludes them.

However, I doubt if even the black actors complaining the loudest could have dreamed the lengths the BBC would go to appear inclusive.

I eagerly await their adaptation of The Color Purple, starring Emma Watson as Celie.

Love how he inserts "quality being important" before "fair representation being important."

They don't give a rats arse about the former only the latter.

Does adding a black character to a historical drama actually ruin the quality of that story, or does it just bother you?

The complaints again ignore that BBC is a company that sells ad time to advertisers that want their products sold to everyone. Diversity of cast could lead to more viewers, at least that's what they believe. They're not trying to destroy your culture. Your British culture. Of which you guys of course feel strong ownership, for some reason.

The next actress that plays rosa parks should be asian and members of the king family should be portrayed by mexicans.

And he makes it work too. That frickin' guy sucks his own dick so hard, he's lost his gag reflex.

Here's your upvote.

What is added to the story when Mrs. Cratchit is race swapped to a black woman?

Why can’t “non-woke” movies/tv be made? It seems there are gatekeepers at every level who’s sole purpose is to prevent movies for white audiences to be made. This is a trillion dollar industry that gets ignored. A few movies have slipped through the cracks of the censors though “once upon a time in Hollywood” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” but I want movies like “Gone with the Wind” to be made so young white people can re-gain pride and respect for the cultural heritage.

Don't you already see plenty of black actors when you search for BBC movies?
