ETA: I would, for example, advise anyone who thinks Star Trek 2009 is a "great" reboot - knock yourself out, enjoy the BSG - it is for you. Ditto for people who prefer Dr. Who to Star Trek - TOS, or who really enjoyed the Star Wars prequels (or the "improvements" Lucas made to the original films), or the X-Men movies. The new BSG should be deemed "tailor-made" for people like that.

Well, you didn't really watch "the originals" - you're going to have to look around. Greedo did NOT shoot first. He got the drop on Solo, made him sit down - Han unbuckled his blaster. After the negotiations broke down, Greedo says something to the effect of "I've been looking forward to this for a long time." Han says, "Yeah, I bet you have," then shoots Greedo dead, although Greedo does get a shot off. In the "remastered" version one of the improvements is that Greedo fires first, and Han just kills him in response to not make him appear so cold blooded.

The "NOOOOOOOO!!!!!" wasn't in the original version of Jedi. Palpatine is frying Luke because he won't turn. He'd actually be ordered to kill Vader, but wouldn't do it. Vader is recovering slowly and rises up behind Palpatine. He never says a thing, just picks up Palpatine and throws him in the reactor. He doesn't say anything until Luke stops dragging his big a$$ on the way to the shuttle.

I think Lucas put that "NOOOO!!!!!" in to tie it in to the prequels where he looks skyward and shouts "NOOOOOO!!!!!!" upon being told he killed Padma (or whatever her name is.) Pure comedy gold.

To be honest. I don't really give a shite about the NOOOO!!! thing, but I was pretty pissed about the scene with Solo.

The prequels were just awful. And they could have been good.

This thread is hilarious. Love all the arguing over opinions.

In my opinion, your opinion is both right and wrong. I liked the original BSG as a kid. Took me a little while to adjust to Starbuck being a chick, but I loved the new BSG as well.

I think the arguing had more to do with someone who will remain nameless ( ) that formed a concrete unwavering opinion on the series by watching 20 minutes of a random episode

I picture it as going down like this:

He turns on the tv and the show is already on. He thinks, "I liked the original, might as well check this out." A short while later this blonde chick appears and someone calls her Starbuck. He thinks, "Starbuck is a chick? frick this, I'm out."

I just didn't like it. There's always a glimmer of hope. I didn't like either Babylon 5 or DS9 the first attempt at those. Now, I think either series is better than the other Star Trek series (except TOS, of course.)

Eventually - when I'm in a nursing home, I'll probably give at least the mini-series a try - although it will probably have been re-reimagined by then (Hollywood only has about 150 ideas, and BSG is one of them.)

Context. Within the "context" of this thread, I'm the only person who specified 20 minutes. In addition to being super smart (some would suggest the smartness extends all the way to my glutes), I also graduated from the 19th grade.

Only 19 years of education? It all begins to make sense. Without a PhD you shouldn't be expected to comprehend the higher philosophical underpinnings of the newer BSG.

How did I miss this thread. And my bat signal...

I can see where a person who was unaware of the original series could enjoy the remake of BG. I just didn't. I prefer new material, based in a new universe (What's wrong with Firefly?), rather than someone trying to get me to watch a program based on its name.

The new BG had little in common with the late 70s series of which I was a fan.

Why should somebody "get me" for that?

Not going to "get" you, I think most people, and I would have been had I been involved with this, are confused by your stance.

It's all about, "you, you, you," but your second response in the thread is:

quote:

I could have advised you against that.

I don't know but if you really believe it's your opinion and your reaction and that's all that matters, then I really think basically making the statement that someone, anyone ELSE, shouldn't watch BSG...that just doesn't match up.

Also, and for the record, I enjoy the original series quite a bit and plan to rewatch I think for the third time this summer, just because it's a lot of fun.

I mean I get the rant about remakes and enjoying original concepts. But I think, if you look at a show runner or director's intention, there are remakes that are trying to pay homage to the original while infusing it with enough new ideas to be original, BSG, Star Trek, The Thing, The Fly, etc.

There are also remakes that are completely built as the previous product, LOTR. (As close as possible at least)

And remakes that are built to shite on the originals. See something like Flubber.
