An event that is sure to rank as one of the biggest pop cultural phenomenons of the decade, the twin release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023, saw the box office light up in a way it hadn't done since before the Wuhan Flu pandemic of 2020-21.
Barbie would win the box office war by raking in $1.4 billion at the global box office to Oppenheimer's $975 million. However it would be the latter film that would dominate the awards season, winning 7 Academy Awards including the coveted prize for Best Picture.

Do you think the people that made Oppenheimer are disgusted that their great film got coupled with Barbie like it did, or happy due to the extra publicity and money?

And we all know what followed a short while later...

I never dreamed Barbie would do that well. And after finally seeing it a while back I can’t believe it did as well as it did because the movie was pretty objectively terrible. Very little about it was enjoyable at all IMO. But I also realize it wasn’t made for me either.

I thought it was funny.
It became an event. The whole group would dress up in pink and white, take pics in the theater lobby, and post on social media platforms. It was a movement.

This always confused me about the "event." *Entirely* different audiences for each movie. Or was this how chicks got their men to go to Barbie?
