Watched it the other day and something kept nagging at the back of my mind. Finally figured it out:

The plot of this movie is pretty retarded. Everything hinges on them going to the future to prevent a future event.

If the Doc would have just told them what was going to happen in the present day, when and where, there would have been no need to go(actually, there is never a need to go) and Biff wouldn't have stolen the time machine and gone back to give himself the sports book and 1985 would not have gotten so fricked up.

I thought the Doc was smarter than that.

Yes. They had to go to the future to prevent Marty's kid getting arrested.

You are right. Doc should have just told them.

And how big of an idiot do you have to be not to keep the sports almanac?

I know there are holes. The Terminator series is probably the worst one. But this whole plot is just stupid.

Why do you have to time-travel to prevent a future event? If you know the outcome, then you don't need to travel to that time.

At least Sphere handled it well. but then, that is Michael Crichton, and he is probably the smartest writer of science related stuff ever.(fiction stories)

So you can have a second movie (and subsequently a third).

What exactly was he supposed to tell who?

leave it alone, its a great movie.

why not just leave right then and do it and take care of it vs waiting 30 years.

because doc was living in the moment. marty couldve fricked it up and then itd be too late. marty seemed like the kind of guy who would botch it up 30 years later.

time frick: what if doc did tell him and the event still happened because marty in the future sucks. so he needed "cool" marty from the past to fix the mistake that his future "knowing" self didnt fix. ya dig?

the irony is that the end of episode 3 completely negated almost everything that happened the future in episode 2 because that future hill valley became alternate future hill valley when Marty didn't get into the accident.

I just thought of something!

What if Marty not getting into that accident set off a butterfly effect and that is the reason we don't have flying cars, hoverboards, self-lacing shoes, etc.

I think the writers have acknowledged this issue with BTTF2 and rationalized that the ending of the first film (which was intended as a joke, not a setup for sequels) tied their hands to a certain degree.

I look at it this way: Doc didn't want to tell Marty his specific future, how he fricked up, but if he showed him how his kid messed up.... Or you can go one step further that maybe Doc didn't want to cross the line of telling Marty what happened, but subconsciously put Marty in the position to find out...

Marty crossed the line (and Doc did by reading the 1955 note) that saved Doc's life, maybe Doc wanted to repay the favor.

Yeah for a guy who supposedly was all about preserving the sanctity of the passage of time, doc sure did haphazardly jump into and frick up 2015. In part 1 he refused to know even tiny details in the future but in part 2 he not only wants to know about his and marty's future but actively work towards changing it. It's my favorite of the trilogy but it really is a stupid premise.

It was my favorite for its diversity. I mean it was interesting as hell seeing how the two marty's and two docs went around 1955 and the whole alternate 1985 and what not. Then of course the end with the mafia looking guy looking like he's about to off Marty when instead he has a letter from 1885 addressed to Marty(that scene blew my mind when I was young) and then Marty running back to Doc and Doc is like GREAT SCOTT!!!!
