I like some of Butler's work, and Kosinski seems to know what he's doing, but this feels like a waste of their talents.

MBJ is clearly a much bigger star and more bankable, which is all that matters, but I think Kelvin Harrison would’ve been a good choice for Tubbs. He worked with Austin Butler already on Elvis and has more of a Philip Michael Thomas vibe than MBJ.

Jordan pulling off Ricardo Tubbs would put him into a new level of actor. When Fox was red hot they tried him and he failed miserably. PMT as Tubbs was a very specific character, smart cop, had an innocence to him, free spirit world view and personality, fiercely loyal and was funny. So far we haven’t seen MBJ do anything close to that, he’s been serious, victim, emotional and villainous. Like alot of modern actors he kind of plays himself most of the time. Crockett is a little bit more mainstream as a character. The military vet, ex athlete, job weary, divorced but true blue cop. His bombastic side is only for his cover. Again Butler hasn’t done one like this before so he too has something to prove here but the character is more straight forward.

Or maybe the two actors create their own personality. No point in mimicking the past.

That’s a cop out, you’d be changing the thing which makes it no longer that thing. That’s why 2006 failed.

Seriously doubt that's why it failed. 90% of the people who will watch this one will have never seen an episode of Miami Vice.

Wouldn't be the first movie to switch it up. Starsky & Hutch comes to mind.

You can doubt it but you can’t refute it. Not sure about your hypothetical audience, you just threw it in there as some vague attempt at a point.

The movie bombed and it bombed because the characters and tone were completely upended. As you say, people who now watch it as simply a drug cop movie thinks it’s fine but it bombed at the theatre and initially because it wasn’t Miami Vice. As far as the OG show being extinct, it’s having a rebirth on free streaming services, hitting the top 10 on some and #1 on fandango or Vudu. Not sure what you’re trying to do here outside of your usual (attack anything classic and simp for everything new) schtick.

You have an opinion. I have an opinion. It's ok to have an opinion. Enjoy life.

Also, I never attack classics. I love the classics. What I don't do is pretend that a retelling/remake/reimagining of a classic will somehow damage the classic.

Of course but you haven’t given a basis for yours so I’m asking

You don’t have to retell it but like you said the audience is a bit older so the origin of brothers keeper is probably a good place to introduce these guys to younger people. Can’t really go wrong, dropping these actors into that situation could be fun. But they’re Vice cops, you can take the story a lot of interesting places or take good elements from the best of the OG show and put them into the new one.

I did though. I said I don't believe the movie failed because the characters didn't mimic the TV show. I believe it failed because it sucked. The plot was trash. That's just my opinion. I can't prove it. I can't disprove yours. We don't always have to fight.

I don’t disagree with that but completely changing the characters hurt it. It did $25 mil opening weekend, people saw it wasn’t going to be what they wanted before the story was out.

The movie didn't suck, it was a darker, grittier, modern version of the tv series. The plot was not trash, either. It borrowed heavily from Smuggler's Blues and other episodes of the series.
