I don't know if its classic or not, but I love it. Definitely a top 10 movie in the past 20 years for me.

I watched this for the first time earlier this year and it absolutely blew me the frick away. I think its one of the best movies of the 2000s. Haven't seen something that made me feel like that in awhile except maybe Train Dreams last year. Cant believe it took me that long to watch it. I remember when it came out 10 years ago hearing it was boring.

Love it. Underrated in the sense that it’s slowly slipped between the cracks over time. Most who’ve seen it like it I think. Modern classic….ehhh for me maybe.

Yes a classic. A lot more emotional impact than any sci-fi in last 20 years. Amy Adams walking down a circular hallway combined with the voice-over at the end of the opening sequence does not get enough discussion.

There are very few if any sci fi movies that are better than it.

Surprised by the number of downvotes. It is a great sci-fi movie.
First watch I didn't love it. The second time I watched it, I wasn't sure why I didn't love it from the first watch.
You can agree or disagree with her decision and still think the movie is great sci-fi.

I need to as well. I had trouble getting into it and kept falling asleep. That being said I tried watching it a week or two after we brought a newborn home from the hospital at night after putting him to bed...probably had something to do with not being able to stay awake

I think so. It’s really well done and I particularly liked how Amy Adams perception of time slowly starts to shift as she learns more of the alien language. Like when she has to step back from her work due to a vision of her daughter seeming like it was happening at the same time as she was working on the translation.
There are a couple of weak writing choices that stick out e.g. Hawkeye saying that science, not language, is the most foundational part of civilization; and the other language expert not knowing the Sanskrit word for war. Not enough to throw me out of the movie though
