Some American accents cause they cant do a good Southern accent

Hell..most non-Southern American actors can't do the accent. Is extremely easy to see the fake.

Exactly. I wonder can british do a Boston Accent?

When i see british doing american its usually non specific like Colin Farrell does so I wonder have there been good cases of them doing a localized accent better than American actors.

They have different types so that makes it even harder.

how UK actors can slip in and out of American accents so much better than an American trying to mimic a UK accent

That's because they're really protective over their accents and Americans can't tell the difference between Americans unless it's a real obvious Southern region.

The Brits just slip into some generic Hans Gruber American accent and everyone's like whatever, that sounds American I guess.

But Brits are like, that's not North London! That's South London! This is all wrong.

Relative to population, the US isn’t very good in any of the arts.

American actors... a lot are young guys and girls showing up in Hollywood and trading sex for auditions.

After everything out there now, I think about whether every actress and actor 20-35 now, screwed someone at the start of their career.

Americans don’t come close to the quality of UK/Australian actors. Just look at the cast of 2 very “American” movies, Black Hawk Down & Zero Dark Thirty, and compare numbers.

??

Edgerton, Clarke, and Strong were the only significant speaking roles of “Americans” who were raised outside the U.S.

Agreed on BHD, though.

I think we hold our own in literature and modern popular music. We used to be pretty great in acting from the beginning of moving pictures up through the fifties but we seem to have lost our tradition of stage acting and developed an overemphasis on looks. How many American t.v./movie stars acted on the stage through highschool college and early career and how many played defense for the Miami Hurricanes and then did WWE?

Idris Elba and Dominic West both did great Baltimore accents in The Wire.

I've been watching this thread expecting it to turn into a Kate Beckinsale tribute. I'm disappointed in each and every one of you.

I would definitely disagree with that. As the poster above said, the U.S. definitely punches its weight or above in literature and modern music.

We don’t have the length of literature history that many of our developed country peers do, but we absolutely match any of them and exceed most from about the 1850’s on.

As for music, modern music globally basically is the American musical sound. Virtually all significant forms of modern music either originated in or were deeply influenced by America - jazz, blues, rock, hip hop, pop, soul, country, metal, funk, folk, R&B, on and on and on. I think it’s tough for us to appreciate because we live here and are surrounded by it 24/7, but imagine what music would look like today if the U.S. never existed.

We have Twilight and the Hunger Games, the UK has Harry Potter and Fifty Shades of Grey - not exactly a high brow pillow fight.

Eh, not sure I'd agree for a couple of reasons, specifically on literature:
- It takes a little while for a really great work to become recognized as such
- It's not like England or France or a lot of other places are pumping out great writers at the moment, either

Still, we've had Foster Wallace, Franzen, Walker, Ellis, Morrison, and quite a few more in recent times. McCarthy's run from Blood Meridian to The Road was exceptionally great and will be recognized as such 100 years from now by people from all over the world.

#1 Because those are the only 2 countries in the world?

#2 I said quality not quantity

Only one of those guys is actually British. One is Scottish and the other is Irish.

Most Aussie actors can easily modify their accents to sound British. Cate Blanchette, Guy Pierce, and Russell Crowe come to mind. Margo Robbie and Samara Weaving are Aussie actresses who can do both an English and American accent flawlessly.

I’d be willing to bet that lots of fans of the tv series Yellowstone don’t know that Kelly Reilly is a Brit.
