I enjoyed SNAFU. It didnt have much in the way of originality, but it was fun none the less.
Also I wrestled in high school but I balanced it out with my nerdom. So it is possible.
After watching Screwattack's Death Battle I'm interested in Berserker but should I go anime or manga first? I know with the rom com genre it can sometimes make a difference.

All we can really ask for in a show. If it captures our attention, it was fun. No matter how it goes about doing it. Looking at you AGK.
Btw, the main female protagonist in Charlotte is the same VA that voices Iroha Isshiki from SNAFU. I enjoy her style, seems to play snarky fairly well. In some ways Charlotte has a similar feel as SNAFU, kind of a teen comedy/action vibe, with some random darkness thrown in. You might like it if you like rom-com. Just doesnt have a lot of rom, yet.

I'm assuming you mean Berserk?
I never read manga personally. You started with Manga before getting into anime right, or did I misunderstand you? If that is your preferred medium, then go with the Manga. I haven't watched Berserk yet. Soon though.
That being said, based on this description of Berserk.
quote:
Themes of isolation, camaraderie, and the question of whether humanity is fundamentally good or evil pervade the story, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature. Both the manga and anime are noted for their heavy violence.
You should also try Overlord and Akame Ga Kill.
Overlord has way more of an adult theme than I thought it would. Wholly different than LH or SAO. I think I like it better than either. SAO is fun and kinda dumb, LH is kinda slow and smart. Overlord bridges the gap, and isn't made for teenagers.
Akame Ga Kill is also a really, really, really good show that has more of an adult theme mixed with mercenary sword play. If you can't take Feels, don't watch it. It hits you pretty hard in some spots, with both good and bad.
On a side note. Just realized I've watched 46, 24 minute episodes since Monday night. Add in the commercials on Crunchyroll, and I've spent 20+ hours watching anime while doing homework. I need to slow my roll. Won't have anything to watch soon. Plus, this much homework is making my brain bleed.

I did mean Berserk. Gut's backstory was really messed up and got me interested to see how everything panned out.
And I got my start with anime, more specifically Tenchi Muyo when it premered on Toonami around 2000. That got me started on anime and then I moved to manga. I would say I'm more of a manga guy only because I like having thr physical work in my hands like with comic books.
I saw Berserk started as manga and later became an anime so I may start there. Manga generally does a better job of telling a full story while I find anime is usually better at making a connection with the characters. Plus since I'm not a huge blood and guts guy, the manga might be the better route.

My understanding is that both are equally gory. Then again, in print its not quite as, uh, shocking to the senses? I guess?

Just finished Death Note. The first 16-17 episodes are some of the best tv I've ever seen. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The cat and mouse game between Light and L was awesome. Show got a little off track when they brought in Misa and then got kinda lame when it went to the business guy. Picked up some towards the end. The ending wasn't quite what I was hoping for but still ok. Overall 8/10 show. I need to watch more anime but the stupid Japanese stuff they have to throw in is kind of a turn off.

What do you mean by this exactly?
Depending on what you mean, I am sure Scruffy, and to a lesser extent I, can point you in the direction of some shows you would like.

Female characters mostly. Misa in Death Note, Chi Chi in DBZ, those type of characters. I hate when there's some serious thing going on and this annoying bitch comes out and starts freaking out and acting like a 12 year old. Its not just women, there's plenty of times in DBZ for example when Goku acts like a dumbass and of course Gohan as the Great Saiyaman is really stupid too. These types of characters seem to only exist in Japan.

As a big comic book fan, they are not unique to Japan. Plenty of American comics have characters like that or break character for some stupidity. Frankencastle. *shakes head*
But if that isn't your cup of tea than ignore every suggestion I ever make lol.

Started 3 new ones for this season.
Utawarerumono: The False Faces 7/10
Beautiful Bones 7.5/10
One Punch Man 8/10
All three are great. One Punch Man is freaking hilarious, a fun action/adventure show.
Beautiful Bones is gorgeously animated and has an interesting concept, could get really dark. More of a crime drama with a enough funny mixed in to keep it from being droll.
UtFF is more of a fantasy/adventure, seems like a fun show so far. Reminds me of GATE in some ways, mainly certain character interactions.
Hey Scruffy, did you ever watch Overlord? Show was freaking amazing. Its the best of the "stuck in a game" animes. It is what SAO could have been with more patience.

Rewatching Mobile Fighter G Gundam. This is still one of my favorites not only in the Gundam series but all animes. The story has faults and it can be cheesy, but I you get into it you'll really enjoy it. It has some of the best, and many of the worst gundam designs. My personal favorite: the Nether Gundam, which was just a windmill that transformed into a Gundam.

Just finished watching Baccano! this week at work, and it was awesome. I tried to pick a favorite character, but they are all so equal and so important to the story I couldn't! Thanks for the recommendation Scruffy and everyone else.
Currently I'm 10 episodes in on Hunter x Hunter and I'm digging the adventure genre so far.

It just has a perfect mixture of mystery, action, violence, and humor.
That's why it's my favorite.

Bump
New recommendation:
The Seven Deadly Sins
It's on Netflix.
New recommendation:
The Seven Deadly Sins
quote:
"Apparently, the Seven Deadly Sins were the strongest and cruelest chivalric order in the kingdom, formed by seven brutal criminals who carved symbols of seven beasts into their bodies. Ten years ago, they were accused of plotting to overthrow the kingdom, and disintegrated after all the Holy Knights launched a general offensive against them."
It's on Netflix.

The Seven Deadly Sins
I saw that one, been thinking about giving it a try.
Being a lifelong Christian, and youth pastor, the name makes me hesitate. I almost can't help it. Its ingrained in me to avoid things that directly mention sin/devil/satan etc..
Though I must admit that particular mental block has been waning. I mean....I did watch, and rather enjoy, The Devil is a Part Timer a few weeks ago.
Btw, dont venture to /r/animu for Anime advice. You'll come away with recommendations for shows about highschool harems...
and then be tempted to watch them.
Btw....Overlord?
Edit: Is that just a re-colored Hisoka from HxH in the back of the group.

It has nothing to do with the actual seven deadly sins outside of the name the group of seven people were branded with. There just happen to be seven knights in the group.
It's actually a really good show. Great combo of action and humor.
I tried Overlord. Haven't been able to get into it.
ETA:
No it isn't.

What episode are you on? It can be a little slow because it shows you what he is thinking day to day, and it can be a little...fan servicey.
I just love that he is OP as frick.
It picks up around episode...3 or 4. Finishes really well.

I just got to episode 3. I'll pick it up again eventually.

Just finished episode 1 of 7 Deadly Sins.
Excellent call Scruffy. Literally fits my preferred genre angles perfectly. I'm disappointed I didn't start it when I saw it the other day.
to you sir.

A friend told me to check out Sword Art Online. It's on Netflix. I think it's an older one but so far, I have loved it. Have any of y'all checked that one out?
