Youtube is saving the theater industry with backrooms and obsession

Cool that it was mainly driven by two unique, original horror movies that overperformed (Obsession, Backrooms), a well done sci-fi book adaptation (Project Hail Mary), and essentially a concert film of the world’s most popular artist (Michael).

Maybe we’ll get more stuff like that and less sequels, spinoffs, and remakes.

are we back?

Its good to see AMC doing well. But no the movie industry isn't back. Many local chains failed during covid and its aftermath. Its expected that when there is a good slate of movies people will want to go to the theatre and now their only option is big chains so that helps their bottom line.

But we are a long way from getting back all the millions of movegoers who stopped during covid. Or who prefer streaming the movie a few weeks later at home. Or who plain cant afford it due to inflation etc.

Still, I am happy to see it. Movie theaters hold great memories for me and I want them to stay profitable and alive long term.

I brought my daughter and her cousins to a movie a couple of weeks ago, and it was my first time in a theater since covid. Now my wife and I are going to catch a movie this week for what it's worth.

A decent sized chain, Alamo Drafthouse, which I've seen hundreds of movies at, has mostly been rebranded to Flix Brewhouse (with 10% of the former's beer selection.) After seeing an average of 15 movies a year until COVID, and then about 6 a year since, my theater attendance is now about once a year, starting in 2024. And then it's for classics, like Saving Private Ryan before Memorial Day.

Saw Project Hail Mary and The Sheep Detectives in the last couple of months. That's one more than I saw last year. Will see the Spielberg movie and maybe one more this year.

Of the 2 theaters I've been to, one was clean and the other was shabby. The shabby one was AMC. The shabbiness made me wonder if they're pinching pennies trying to hang on.

It depends on where you’re located. They spent millions renovating the AMC 16 in baton rouge and added a Dolby theater/ macguffins bar

Went to see Pressure this weekend at the Elmwood 20 in Harahan…hadn’t been to a movie in a few years.
