Some people dislike that it's depressing and feels different from the first two.

A lot of people disliked it because it took a steaming dump on the ending of the second one. Hell, the way they did Carrie Henn (Newt) is abysmal.

Hell, even the author of the novelization was upset at them killing off Newt but the studio forced him to rewrite his novel to fit her death. He basically told the studio he would never do another novelization for them again.

James Cameron also was irked at how Hicks and Newt were treated (basically dumped like unceremonious garbage) at the start of the film.

Newt literally died because the director found her "annoying".

I'm trying not to spoiler for OP, but I was ok with that because the movie just commits to that dark direction. 3 starts dark, you see characters trying to pull it out of the darkness and ultimately they fail, leading to the climax.

That's why I'm ok with 3. It goes down a dark, bleak path and never apologizes for it. The ending with Ripley fits that well, where it's actually the best ending for her and the right thing.

I mean, I like it, but I can fully understand why others hate it and it's divisive. It's not the easiest movie to like, especially if you liked #2.

Same here. But happy to see others enjoyed it more.

Covenant was a mess and pretty terrible.

I don't remember much, but remember liking some parts of it.

I think the franchise ended up spending way too much time with the origins of the Aliens.

Too often they resort to answering questions that no one (or at least very few people) were asking. Answering "who was the giant dead alien at the beginning of Alien" would have been a lot more meaningful closer to when Alien came out - by the time it did, most people are like, "Wait, there was a dead alien in that?"

When it comes to that franchise, I wish I didn’t know what I know now about it.

I picked up a DVD box set of of the first four Alien movies at a thrift store last year for $5. Been meaning to watch Alien 3. I think there's a documentary attached to it about the process of making the movie. There were all sorts of scripts and story pitches for it -- including a famous one by William Gibson where the xenomorph ends on an medieval planet where they don't even have metal and a bunch of monks have to battle it.

This was def true of Covenant. which is a shame, cause i thought kathrine waterston was really fantastic casting.

her character and performance held so much promise, but the story ends up just being about David and his schemes i didnt really care about any of that at all, and i really hate the direction they took with explaining the alien's origins.

SPOILERS OF COVENANT

Anyone who watcheD Prometheus or Covenant wanted more background on the engineers. I could have cared less about the actual xenomorphs (sp?).

I get that we are supposed to not really know anything since they are probably all dead thanks to David, but their story is what drew me in to the previous two films.

Likely same as most, I'd say the 1st two are only great movies. The others vary from worth watching once to meh.

The "prequels", Prometheus and Covenant, are incredible in concept but the follow through is not very good. Kind of like the Star Wars prequels.

All OP needs to know is that all of them are at least enjoyable. Alien 3 is criminally underrated; it’s arguably the second best in the franchise IMO.

And Prometheus is nowhere near as bad as people say it is. It’s not great cinema, and sure the characters make irrational decisions left and right. But it’s a solid movie and a great one to not get caught up in the details. Covenant was pretty meh, but even still enjoyable enough.

Oh yeah, to clarify they’re all good watching IMO. Not a waste of watch time at all. I mean, we can pick apart the little things but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad watch. No regrets on them.

Alien was definitely better before we learned the origin or backstories.

It was better as just a monster movie...instead of what Prometheus and Covenant tried to make it.

I felt the same way for a long time. As Ive gotten older I watched it several times and learned to appreciate it especially the assembly cut. The sound track is the best in the series imo.

I thought Covenant was just a monster movie. It ditched most of the exploration and unknown for Aliens ripping people apart.

Covenant's problem was that the characters actions frequently made no sense and that the plot was very by the numbers, but it was a monster movie.

Also, for the OP, once you finish with the franchise you should give Alien vs. Predator a try (and if you have never seen the first two Predator movies, watch them ASAP and before AVP).

But I admittedly liked AVP way, way more than I should have.

I thought the first AVP was ok. It's nothing remarkable, but I enjoyed watching it.

The second, Requiem, was probably the darkest movie I've ever seen. Not dark in tone, dark as in the lighting was so bad, you couldn't see jack. I've never had that complaint before, but I literally couldn't see half of what was going on.

The farther along we go from it, the better 3 seems to me.

Resurrection was dumb fun. 3 suffered from studio mismanagement up and down the line and still ended up a passable horror story.

I would've loved the Gibson script being made though.

As we went from xenomorph makes victims other eggs before it dies like a mayfly.

To there's a queen that makes more durable progeny.

To Gibson's, they also create an infectious spore that can cause people to turn.

I loved Alien. I actually thought Aliens was disappointing.

Alien 3 is just weird. Alien Resurrection is a lot like Aliens but goofier in tone.

I hated Prometheus but loved Covenant. Covenant might be my second favorite Alien film.

It should've been. If you told audiences that Jaws 2 was going to be about a naval task force that is sent out to wipe out sharks but finds the tables turned when schools of Great Whites devour their ships, they'd say, "Wait. That's not Jaws."

But it was the 80's and we loved excess and the movie kicked arse.
