Just got the bluray set from a friend that contains all 6 films. I've only seen the first 4 and only once when I was about 10. Obviously at that age they all scared the shite out of me but I remember enjoying them. I know just based on popular culture that the first 2 are legitimately good with the second being one of the best science fiction action movies of all time. The last 2 I really don't hear about but I'm assuming if I watched them now they would not hold up especially when compared to the first 2. The Prometheus series I've never seen and don't know much about. What's the boards opinion on these movies?

First two are great, last four are not. You should check them all out.

First two are all timers. I didn’t particularly like Alien 3, but I enjoyed Resurrection. Prometheus and Covenant are solid.

If Alien 3 has the assembly cut you should watch that instead of the theatrical version.

The first remains the best, by far.

I like Prometheus and it probably would have been better as a stand-alone because of all the fanboys trashed it.

Covenant isn’t awful, but nothing spectacular. Both Prometheus and Covenant introduce a story that is much more interesting than the one the actual films follow.

Alien 3 sucks. Resurrection is great. Prometheus and Covenant are decent enough.

It being part of the Alien franchise has nothing to do with the vast majority of it's issues. The scientists are beyond stupid the entire movie. Every death is idiotic. The black goo seems to do whatever the writers wanted with no rhyme or reason for it all. Nobody acts like a real human being. Let's take our helmets off on an alien planet... I'm scared of a skeleton but will play with a snake monster... I'm mapping the alien structure with robots but got lost anyway... Instead of running to the side I'm going to let the giant doughnut ship roll over me... Guy Pierce has old man makeup on so bad it makes Mickey Rooney's yellow-face in Breakfast at Tiffany's look Oscar caliber.

The craziest thing of all is somehow, someway the people in Alien: Covenant are even dumber than these clowns.

Alien and Aliens are goats.

I enjoyed Alien Resurrection even tho its kinda bad. Alien 3 is meh.

Prometheus was very pretty and dumb.
Covenant was a mess and pretty terrible.

The first two are classics.

Three is a mess for a variety of reasons, with one of the big ones being the studio fricking rookie director David Fincher from editing the film into something making an iota of sense.

Resurrection is ham and cheese with little else there.

Alien is a really scary horror movie about people stuck in a spaceship with a horrible monster that's picking them off. It still holds up and looks great.

Aliens is a bad arse action movie with great characters.

Alien 3 I haven't seen it since it first came out. It's a real downer because SPOILERS everyone who survived Aliens ends up getting killed.

Alien Resurrection is OK. There's a lot of gross gore in it.

Prometheus was a Phantom Menace level disappointment and an exercise in not giving the audience what it wants. Michael Fassbender was great in it.

Alien: Covenant somehow managed to be worse than Prometheus.

Umm. I have nothing to say. This guy said it all. Except I think I enjoy Resurrection a little more than him.

I saw Alien 3 once in theater and have no desire to ever see it again.

First two are classics.

The third is divisive. Some people like its bleakness (me included) and gritty realism. Some people dislike that it's depressing and feels different from the first two.

Resurrection just wasn't very good for me. It's pretty over the top, particularly Ripley's character, but simultaneously not much fun.

Prometheus...you'll enjoy it more if you don't think of it as an Alien film. It really isn't, but it's a decent space exploration film. You won't enjoy it if you demand logic out of characters. If you turn your brain off, it's ok.

Covenant is much more an Alien film. It has the same failing in terms of many illogical character decisions. That said, the Alien action is solid and it's a visually impressive film. Also:

I'd watch them all, ultimately. I don't regret watching any, despite flaws. Maybe I regret Resurrection a bit for how it treats Ripley's character.

Depends if you prefer pure scifi horror, or prefer action horror. If you like action horror, then Aliens is likely to be your favorite.
